Greenwich High boys tennis team well-represented in championship matches of CIAC Invitational Tournament

The championship matches of the CIAC Invitational is being held today and the ultra-competitive high school boys tennis tournament certainly features a Greenwich theme.

Senior Dylan Atkinson of Greenwich is playing in the title match of the tournament’s singles bracket, while the championship doubles match features two Cardinals tandems.

That’s right, teammates become opponents today at Milford Indoor Tennis Center, as Greenwich seniors Cai Jain and Nick O’Brien, seeded second, will play Cardinals teammates Rohan Mittal, a sophomore and Harrison Wolfe, a junior, in the CIAC Invitational’s doubles final. The match is scheduled to begin today at 3 p.m.

In the CIAC Invitational singles final, Atkinson, the No. 2 seed, will face Petro Kuzmenok of Fairfield Warde. Atkinson advanced to the championship singles match by posting a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lukas Phimvongsa of Enfield COOP in Thursday’s semifinals at Milford Indoor Tennis Center.

In the Round of 16 match, Atkinson defeated Michael Lorenzetti of Notre Dame-West Haven, 6-0, 6-4. He then topped No. 7 Liam Hovorka of Avon in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-5. Atkinson excelled at first singles throughout the season for the Cardinals, who went 22-0 on their way to winning the FCIAC and Class LL tournaments.

Jain/O’Brien defeated Akshay Bulsara/Benjamin Glassman of Amity in the Round of 16, 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, they were 6-1, 6-2 winners before beating Ravie Corrie/Amaan Baweja of Avon in the semifinals, 0-6, 6-3, 10-8 – rallying for the win, following a challenging first set.

Mittal/Wolfe of Greenwich notched a 6-2, 6-3 win against fourth-seeded Matthew Kelly/Robert Donahue of Fairfield Prep in the Round of 16, then swept their Glastonbury foes, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

The semifinal round match saw Wolfe/Mittal also stage a comeback. They earned a spot in the finals by defeating Aidan White/Will Donnelly from Darien, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8, in comeback fashion.
