Sophie Roth was an athlete for all seasons during her Greenwich High School career.
In the fall, Roth ran cross country, the winter saw her skate for the school’s ice hockey team and in the spring, she excelled on the lacrosse field for the Cardinals, who benefited from the skills and leadership she brought to each sport.
Greenwich showed its appreciation to Roth for her commitment and dedication to athletics during the 2022-2023 scholastic school year, presenting her with the Greenwich High School 2023 Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Roth graduated from Greenwich High School tonight and will continue her athletic career soon at Gettysburg College, where she will join the school’s lacrosse team.
“I was honored to receive the award,” Roth said. “To be recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year at Greenwich High School, where there are so many exceptional female athletes is quite special. This was a great year to finish out my high school athletic career, but definitely bittersweet. I am thankful to all my coaches, teammates and parents for making this year so memorable.”

After competing on the Cardinals’ cross country team in the fall, Roth served as one of the captains of the school’s ice hockey team during the winter season, a role she impressively filled.
She was the team’s leading scorer, registering several hat tricks during the season, along with a number of two-goal performances on the ice. Roth’s excellent play, earned her the honor of being chosen as a member of the All-FCIAC Girls Hockey First Team.
Additionally, she received Honorable Mention recognition by GameTimeCT when it released its All-State Girls Hockey Team.
On the lacrosse field, Roth was one of the Cardinals’ mainstay senior defenders. She helped lead the defensive unit for Greenwich, which produced a successful 2023 season, posting a record of 12-6 on its way to advancing to the semifinal-round of both the FCIAC and CIAC Class L tournaments.

Roth enjoyed playing a varsity sport each season at GHS.
“Playing three sports, while it has kept me busy through the year, I loved every second of it,” she said. “The friendships and close bonds I have formed with each of my teammates on the separate teams are priceless. In each of the sports I play my role has been different, which is also super unique and makes each sport fun in their own way. More so, playing three sports throughout high school has allowed me to become a better, well-rounded athlete with each sport having components that translated into the other, which has benefited me greatly.”

During her athletic career at Greenwich, Sophie had the special opportunity to play alongside her sisters – Delaney, Kelsey and Aubrey – in each sport. She and Kelsey are twins.
“One thing that made the three sports seasons so memorable was getting to share them with my sisters,” Sophie noted. “My twin sister Kelsey has been on all the same teams as me since freshman year. My older sister Delaney was a Greenwich High School Class of 2021 graduate and was a three-sport varsity captain for me my freshman and sophomore year and my younger sister Aubrey (a rising junior) has been on our hockey and lacrosse team for the past two years. Not being on the field or ice with them is something I’ll definitely miss.”
Indeed, Sophie can’t wait to travel to Gettysburg College, where she will bring her lacrosse skills.
“To play lacrosse at a school that is consistently competing for a Division III NCAA championship is something I worked hard for and am so excited for,” she said. “I was constantly inspired and looked up to my older sister and dad, who both played collegiate lacrosse and knew that was something I wanted to do as well.”
