Matthew Trimmer certainly had extra responsibilities during each season he played sports at Greenwich High School during his senior year.

Trimmer, who graduated from Greenwich High School this week, was a three-sport athlete for the Cardinals, competing on their varsity football, ice hockey and lacrosse teams, while serving as one of the captains of each squad his senior year.

An All-FCIAC Boys Lacrosse First Team selection, an All-FCIAC Football West Team honoree and a key contributor to Greenwich’s hockey team, Trimmer recently received the Greenwich High School Male Athlete of the Year Award for the 2022-2023 scholastic year.

“I am incredibly honored to be selected for the Athlete of the Year award at the high school,” Trimmer said. “Ever since I was a little kid I couldn’t wait to finally suit up for Greenwich High School and be a part of the programs at the school, so to have my name on that plaque alongside some of the best athletes to ever attend GHS is a tremendous honor that I am so blessed to receive.”

Trimmer will continue his athletic career at Providence College, where he will play on the school’s Division I lacrosse team. He was a standout defensive player on the Cardinals’ 2023 lacrosse team, helping anchor the squad’s defensive performance each game.

His efforts were recognized, as he was chosen as a member of All-FCIAC Boys Lacrosse Tier One First Team as a defender. During the ice hockey season, Trimmer was a forward for the Cardinals, who saved their best hockey for the postseason. Greenwich’s boys hockey team advanced to both the FCIAC and CIAC Division I Tournaments, posting several impressive victories along the way.

Greenwich’s 2022 football season this past fall, saw it win the CIAC Class LL state championship with a 37-17 triumph over Fairfield Prep in the title game at UConn’s Rentschler Field.

Like the lacrosse and hockey seasons, Trimmer provided outstanding leadership as one of the Cards’ football captains.

“When it comes to discussing my time as a three-sport captain, there are countless moments that I will cherish for the rest of my life just from this year alone, when I was in that role,” Trimmer said. “For me, one of the coolest parts about being a three-sport captain was welcoming the underclassmen to the varsity team and driving them to practice, or to a team dinner after film.”

“Those moments meant a lot to me, because I was that underclassman and it meant the world to me to have a captain that was also a friend, so I wanted to give that back,” Trimmer noted. “It is such an honor to be a three-sport captain at a school like Greenwich High. There are so many leaders on every team throughout the school, so for each of my coaches and my teammates from each sport to select me is very humbling and I’m thankful for them.”
