Greenwich Academy finishes with 8-1 record at first FAA cross country meet of the season at Sherwood Island State Park; Sacred Heart Greenwich posts 7-2 record; Greenwich Country Day also competed

Greenwich Academy began competition against its FAA cross country opponents in highly impressive fashion, defeating eight of nine league foes at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport in a meet held on Wednesday.

Sacred Heart Greenwich also fared well, registering a record of 7-2. Sophomore Lily Lyons of Greenwich Academy was the winner of the 3.1-mile race. Lyons crossed the finish line in an eye-opening time of 18:48 for Greenwich Academy.

Senior Maddy Lee, one of GA’s captains, placed second in the race, posting a time of 19:19. Ava Lillis, a Sacred Heart Greenwich senior, finished sixth with a time of 21:23, while Tigers teammate Charlotte Bacigalupo, a junior was seventh (21:53). Maggie Finn, a Sacred Heart junior, finished ninth (22:10).

Grace Sullivan, a senior captain, finished 14th (22:38), while Kate McIntyre (senior captain, 24:24) and sophomore Isabel Pombo (24:28) were 27th and 28th, respectively, for the Gators (8-1).

For Greenwich Country Day School, eighth-grader Giselle Putka finished fourth with a time of 21:03 and her sister Macy Putka, a sophomore, was eighth in 21:55. Annie Noble, a freshman, finished in 18th place, clocking in at 23:00 for GCDS.

Helena Randolph, a senior, placed 23rd (23:56), while sophomore Chloe Coviello posted a time of 25:08 for Sacred Heart (7-2). Junior Casey Duval finished the race in 24:30 for Greenwich Academy, while teammate Aya Ragab, a freshman clocked in at 24:31.

Olivia MacEachern, a sophomore, had a time of 25:02, Nadia Kowalski (sophomore) ran the race in 25:04 and freshman Fiona Reilly had a time of 25:55 for Greenwich Academy.

Senior Jackie Monahan posted a time of 25:09 and sophomore Elisabeth Callagy finished with a time of 25:20 for Sacred Heart. At the meet, Greenwich Academy defeated Sacred Heart, Greens Farms Academy, Rye Country Day School, School of the Holy Child, St. Luke’s School, Greenwich Country Day School, King School and Masters School. Greenwich Academy’s lone loss was to Hopkins School, which went 9-0 in the meet. Sacred Heart Greenwich was victorious against every team except Greenwich Academy and Hopkins School.

“It is going to be a very competitive and exciting cross country season,” Greenwich Academy coach Jane Finch said.
