Greenwich High field hockey team defeats Wilton behind two goals from Thibeault

Greenwich junior forward Kate Donnellan scored three goals for Greenwich in a recent win versus Norwalk.

Greenwich High School’s field hockey team earned a significant 4-1 road win over FCIAC rival Wilton in a well-played, intense game played on Wednesday.

“The game was extremely high-paced and Wilton is a very talented and very fast team,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “I was proud of how the girls responded to such a tough and competitive team.”

The Cardinals’ first goal against the Warriors came on a tally from junior forward Sofia Klingbeil in the game’s first three minutes. Senior captain/midfielder Liv Caminiti began the scoring play by transitioning the ball up the field to junior forward Stella Thibeault, who provided the assist on the goal.

In the third quarter, Thibeault tallied from the top of the circle, then added another goal late in the third quarter. Thiebeault’s second goal was assisted by senior captain/forward Aly Janssen.

Janssen concluded Greenwich’s scoring, converting a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter, sealing the Cardinals’ victory against Wilton. The Warriors advanced to the state championship game in 2022.

“The ball movement was the best we have seen all year and something we have been working on,” Wax noted. “Our defense really played well and was able to stop it before they could get into good scoring position.”

For the season, the Cardinals’ record stands at 3-1. After starting the season with a 9-0 home win over Danbury, the Cards were edged by host Darien, 2-0, in a game that was shortened in the second half due to lightning. The game was played on Sept. 11.

“Once the game is past the halfway point, the refs can decide if the game is finished, due to weather, which is what happened,” Wax said. “It was frustrating, as the first few minutes of the third quarter we were implementing some changes and playing more of our game. Not finishing made the girls hungrier for the next game.”

Greenwich was then victorious against Norwalk at home, 6-1, on Sept. 14. Junior forward Kate Donnellan recorded a hat trick to power the Cards past the Bears. All of Donnellan’s goals came off penalty corners. Thibeault registered two goals and sophomore midfielder Emi Arroyo added one goal in the winning effort.

Up next for Greenwich is a matchup against FCIAC foe Ridgefield on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game will take place at Cardinal Stadium.
