The highly impressive pattern continued for Greenwich High School’s girls volleyball team this week.
Greenwich raised its record to 6-0 with home victories against St. Joseph and Brien McMahon, wins by a familiar score – 3-0.
The Cardinals have been a sweeping success so far, winning all of their matches by a 3-0 count.
Indeed, Greenwich looks like a team that is primed to once again, contend for the FCIAC and state tournament championships. Last season saw the Cardinals register a record of 19-6 on their way to advancing to the FCIAC Tournament semifinals and CIAC Class LL Tournament quarterfinals.

With key athletes back on the court from last season’s successful squad and several players stepping into increased roles, the Cardinals are hoping to soar against their FCIAC and non-conference state foes.
“We have a really strong team,” GHS senior co-captain/libero Hayley Dionis said. “We are coming out really strong each time we play and we have great team chemistry. It’s showing in the way we are playing and I’m really happy with our team.”
Captaining the Cardinals as well are seniors Maggie Petz and Skylar Wilson. Petz is a middle blocker, while Wilson is a defensive specialist, who also excels at helping get the team psyched up.

“I work on uplifting the team and this year we are focusing on our energy and team chemistry,” Wilson said. “Our energy has always set us apart from other FCIAC teams and it’s been like that for years and me and my co-captains are just continuing that.”
Against St. Joseph this past Tuesday, Greenwich recorded a decisive 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 home victory, improving its record to 5-0. Senior Kassidy Bonney registered nine aces, 10 kills, eight digs and two blocks to pace the Cards. Dionis tallied 15 digs and three aces, while junior setter Sarah Bermann helped run the offense with 30 assists, three digs and two aces.
“All of us are versatile players and we are there for one another,” Petz said. “We really value bringing each other up especially in tough situations like we were the second set.”

Marianna Linnehan is in her second season as head coach of the Cardinals. Back as an assistant coach is George Kailas.
“Last year, we had a change in coaching staff, but we adapted so well and we love the coaching staff,” Petz noted. “Marianna and George, they are amazing coaches. Being a part of this team has been such a positive experience.”
Also sparking GHS in its triumph against FCIAC foe St. Joseph was junior Joy Houdre (10 kills, six digs).

“I thought we were playing really well and I thought that everybody I put in played really well,” Linnehan said of her squad’s performance against St. Joseph. “We just have to continue to keep our energy up and move the ball around. Our serve receive is decent right now we just have to work on being consistent with our serving.”
After topping the Cadets, the Cardinals earned a 3-0 win over visiting Brien McMahon on Friday, winning the match by set scores of 25-21, 25-14, 25-14.
Bonney ignited the offense, posting a team-high 16 kills, to go along with eight digs and nine aces. Dionis notched 15 digs, three aces and three assists, while Bermann rang up 32 assists, eight digs, six aces and two kills in the winning effort.

Junior Alina Sarkissian notched 10 kills, two aces, one dig and one block, while Houdre had 13 digs, eight kills and two assists for the victors.
“We’re undefeated right now, we are doing really good – we haven’t dropped a set,” Wilson said. “Quick wins, that’s our goal.”
Bonney, Grace Darnow, Graciella Echevarria, Petz and Wilson are the team’s seniors. Talia Muir, Cameron Clark, Sarkissian, Bermann and Houdre are juniors. Jocelyn Jefferson is a sophomore.

“Our chemistry is one of our strengths,” Dionis noted. “We really depend on each other and when we play it shows. Hardly anything drops. We are always there to communicate with one another.”
Greenwich visits conference rival Fairfield Ludlowe on Wednesday, then travels to Trumbull for another match against St. Joseph on Friday.
The Cardinals’ history includes two FCIAC Tournament championships, which came in 2013 and 2017.

“Our top goal this year is to win it all and we have been focusing on that,” Dionis said. “In order to do that, we have to work on our connections, be aggressive and depend on one another.”
“This year, we want to make it all the way, we want to make it to the end,” Linnehan said.
