Sacred Heart Greenwich field hockey team tops Choate Rosemary Hall, behind two goals from Emma Marvin, Whitney Rousseau, improves record to 3-1

Sacred Heart Greenwich’s varsity field hockey team got right back on the winning track Wednesday, after experiencing its first loss of the season, recently.

The Tigers, who lost to Taft School last week, got back into the win column Wednesday, defeating Choate Rosemary Hall, 5-2, in a NEPSAC home game.

The victors received two goals apiece from senior captain Charly Nemec and freshman Whitney Rousseau. Emma Marvin, a senior captain, registered one goal and one assist for the Tigers (3-1). In the first quarter, Nemec gave SHG a 1-0 lead, scoring with 5:49 remaining.

Marvin tallied at the 3:56 mark, giving Sacred Heart a 2-0 advantage on Choate. The visitors cut Sacred Heart’s lead in half when Maggie Swanson scored with 3:06 to go in the opening quarter.

The home team widened its lead in the second quarter. Freshman Whitney Rousseau scored off an assist from Nemec with 10:37 remaining in the second quarter, then Nemec posted another goal, making it 4-1.

Caroline Holm brought Choate to within 4-2 with a goal at the 9:22 mark of the third quarter, but the Tigers regained their three-goal edge when Rousseau notched her second goal with 12:50 to go in the final quarter. Marvin assisted on the goal. Teresa Harkins made four saves in goal for the Tigers, who host Austin Prep on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“We started with confidence and had a strong first half,” SHG coach Alex Gheorghe said. “Choate had some good moments and forced us to work harder to win the game. We will now focus on Austin Prep.”
