Sacred Heart Greenwich’s field hockey team continued its torrid pace when it traveled to Loomis Chaffee School on Wednesday.
In a hard-fought game, the Tigers posted a 3-1 road victory over NEPSAC foe Loomis, extending its winning streak to five games in the process.
Freshman Whitney Rousseau ignited Sacred Heart’s offense, scoring two goals. Her first goal came with 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Elle Corcoran assisted on the goal, which gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Corcoran made it 2-0, scoring off an assist from senior tri-captain Charly Nemec with 6:03 left in the first quarter.
“We did a great job of working as a team and having a strong press,” Nemec said of the team’s performance against Loomis Chaffee. “We focused in on the positioning of each player when pressing. Many of our opportunities were products of our organization on the field. Overall, I am proud of our hard work and we hope to continue to play with the same grit the rest of the season.”
Rouseau tallied the Tigers’ third goal with 11:25 to go in the second quarter. Nemec assisted on the goal, putting SHG in front, 3-0. Loomis closed to within 3-1 when Presley Paredes notched a goal with 1:14 remaining in the third quarter. Yet that was the lone goal the hosts managed against the Tigers, who raised their record to 7-1.
“I think we played really well against Loomis,” SHG senior tri-captain Emma Marvin said. “They are a strong team and because we are a pretty young and a small team, we had to focus on holding our ground and doing super strong tackles. We definitely executed this plan as a whole team did a super job at the timing and strength of our tackles.”
Teresa Harkins made four saves to earn the win in goal for Sacred Heart.
Said SHG senior tri-captain Payton Sfreddo: “As we enter the tougher part of our season, it was exciting and promising to pull out a strong win against Loomis. It was a fantastic opportunity to build strength and confidence, especially as a young and energetic group. As the center forward, I was so happy to see how well we converted up front as a team.”
Sacred Heart visits Hotchkiss School for what should be, a tough game, on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. They will then travel to FAA rival Greenwich Academy on Monday for a 4:15 p.m. matchup.
“Overall, we played super strong, organized and with fiery spirit which helped us win,” Marvin said.
“Everyone had an important role in this win and we’re excited to continue this momentum,” Sfreddo said.
