Excelling on both ends of the field, the Greenwich High School field hockey team is certainly riding an impressive streak.
The Cardinals have won three straight games, defeating Hall, Brien McMahon and Trumbull and while doing so, have outscored the opposition, 21-0, over the three games.
Greenwich currently has a record of 6-2-0-1 in the FCIAC and is in first place in the FCIAC West Division standings. Their overall record is 7-3-0-1. On Oct. 7, the Cardinals cruised to a 6-0 road win over non-conference foe Hall.
Junior forward recorded a hat trick to pace GHS past Hall. Her first goal came with 2:29 remaining in the opening quarter off an assist from sophomore forward Carlota Perez. Kate Donnellan, a junior forward, scored with 1:39 to go in the first quarter, giving Greenwich a 2-0 lead on Hall.

In the second quarter, Thibeault tallied 47 seconds into the quarter. She completed her hat trick at the 7:26 mark of the second quarter, making it 4-0. Aly Janssen, a senior forward, notched a goal with 6:50 to go in the second quarter, then junior defender Lexi Carino scored on a tip from sophomore midfielder Emilia Arroyo, giving GHS a 6-0 halftime lead.
“It was the craziest weather and at one point it was raining so hard and it was so windy that it was coming down sideways,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “Despite the rain, the girls played extremely well and we settled into a rhythm and the pace we have been aiming for all year. Right away, we applied great pressure and were able to have many fast breaks.”
“Our attack and midfield really improved their defense and were able to press well,” Wax continued. “Our defense had great positioning and was able to withstand all of their offensive attacks. Many goals were unassisted as we were able to initiate our fast break and set up a one-one-one with the goalie.”
On Monday, Greenwich rolled to a 6-0 victory against visiting FCIAC foe Brien McMahon. In this game, Donnellan registered four goals. Her first tally came off a pass from Thibeault 38 seconds into the opening quarter.

Donnellan’s unassisted goal made it 2-0 in favor of Greenwich with 7:07 left in the first quarter. Thibeault then scored an unassisted goal with 1:03 to go in the opening quarter. Donnellan posted her third goal in the first quarter, tallying with 30 seconds still left in the opening quarter, making it 4-0.
Junior forward Sofia Klingbeil had a second-quarter goal and Donnellan added her fourth goal of the game in the third quarter, sealing the Cards’ scoring.
“We only had one offensive corner but we had such fast ball movement that we were able to get off our shots before the defense could set up,” Wax said of her squad’s effort against Brien McMahon. “We had been working on filling lanes on the field and moving the ball as soon as the defender commits and we executed perfectly.
“The defense worked really well together and was able to step up and clear the ball before they could really have the opportunity to bring their offensive pressure.”
On Thursday, Greenwich traveled to Trumbull and earned a 9-0 triumph. Donnellan recorded a hat trick, Thibeault tallied twice, while Sofia Klingbeil, Aly Janssen, Perez and sophomore Clara Ojea each added a goal apiece for the victors. Senior goalie Kelly Janssen registered another shutout win in goal for the Cardinals.
“It was an outstanding full team win with valuable contributions from every single member,” Wax noted. “We had excellent ball movement, relentless hustle, beating them to many 50/50 balls and utilized the whole length and width of the field. Kelly (Janssen) as always is a great voice and leader on the defensive end.”
