Thirty-five first-half points from its offense, another shutout from its defense – yes, the Greenwich High School football team produced another dominant performance against an FCIAC foe, this time Trumbull.
Ranked No. 1 in the GameTimeCT Top10 Poll, the Cardinals excelled on both sides of the ball from start-to-finish, exhibiting exactly why they’ve been so difficult to contend with.
Receiving three touchdowns from running back George Vomvolakis and getting another outstanding defensive effort, Greenwich rolled to a 42-0 victory against host Trumbull Friday night at rainy McDougall Stadium.

Vomvolakis rushed for more than 100 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown run for the Cardinals, who once again, displayed a balanced attack on offense.
“On offense, we just stuck to our game plan and did what our coaches said to do,” Vomvolakis said. “We just did what we had to do and came away with the win.”
One week after posting a decisive 30-14 Homecoming Day win over Darien in a game that coach Anthony Morello said was the offense’s best performance, Greenwich moved the ball throughout its matchup against Trumbull.

“When all the facets on offense are clicking and 11 guys are doing the right thing, good things are going to happen,” Morello said. “To be able to do that two weeks in a row against quality teams and quality opponents is something to be proud of.”
The triumph marked Greenwich’s second shutout in three weeks. They were victorious at Danbury two weeks ago, 36-0 and one week ago, topped Darien, 30-14. The Eagles (3-3) entered the game intent on continuing its strong showing against another opponent behind its vaunted running game.
Yet Greenwich succeeded at slowing down the Eagles’ ground game, led by senior Rowan Johnston, while applying consistent pressure on sophomore quarterback Caleb Wuchiski.

“We’ve been practicing all week for their run game, they’re a heavy run team,” Greenwich senior linebacker John Insinga noted. “We put in a lot of formations to stop the run and when they came out and switched the formations, we knew how to align to it and we executed greatly.”
As he has done all season, Insinga was a force on defense, disrupting the opposition’s offense. Senior linebacker Sebastian Parra intercepted a pass and registered a sack and senior defensive end Logan Jozwiak also sacked Wuchiski for unbeaten GHS (6-0).
“We played like a team 100 percent,” Parra said. “The backfield and the front seven played awesome, so it was really good.”
The Cards broke the game open quickly, scoring 14 first-quarter points, before adding 21 in the second quarter. After Trumbull went three-and-out on its first drive, highlighted by a sack from Jozwiak, the Cardinals efficiently drove down the field on their opening possession.

“Spreading the ball to senior wide receivers Brandon Auguste, Ryan McBreairty and Gavyn Gennarelli, Greenwich quickly moved the ball into the red zone. The drive was capped by senior quarterback Rocco Grillo’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Auguste in the left corner of the end zone with 6:14 left in the first quarter.
Special teams set up Greenwich’s next score. The visitors blocked a Trumbull punt, setting them up deep in Eagles territory. Vomvolakis, a senior, who returned to action a week ago, after missing a couple of games with an ankle injury, concluded the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run with 3:30 to go in the first quarter.
“When the defense and special teams are playing like that and giving the offense good field position, good things can happen,” Morello said.

Greenwich’s defensive unit also set the tone early, making it difficult for Trumbull to gain significant yardage and earn first downs.
“We executed early,” Morello noted. “Defensively, we’ve been good against the run all year and we wanted to contain Rowan, he’s got 17 touchdowns on the season, he’s an excellent athlete for them. But they had only thrown 60 passes through five games, so we wanted to focus on that box and control that box.”
“The elusive Vomvolakis broke free from Trumbull’s defense for an impressive 66-yard touchdown run at the 10:49 mark of the second quarter, making it 21-0.
“I saw the whole open and when I saw no safety there, I kept running for a touchdown,” Vomvolakis said.

Vomvolakis experienced plenty of success running behind Greenwich’s offensive line, led by his brother, Peter, a junior and seniors David Virella, Dylan Brehm and Nicholas Granitto.
“Everyone doubted our O-Line, but they definitely proved them wrong all season,” George Vomvolakis said.
Morello was pleased with the communication and chemistry the offensive line showed throughout the FCIAC matchup.
“Trumbull was stunting and twisting and trying to create havoc up front,” he said. “There was a lot of communication on the line before the snap and we weren’t turning anybody free. We graduated four O-linemen, but it has gotten better every game. This was their best performance as a unit.”

Grillo, who threw a 5-yard TD pass to Auguste with 6:49 remaining in the second quarter, was protected well by his offensive linemen throughout – a common theme this season.
“The offensive line played a huge part,” Grillo said. “We had four rushing touchdowns and that’s not set up if we’re not winning inside. There was no pressure today. I didn’t take a sack and we were able to throw the ball down field. They got the job done. That pocket was 100 percent clean and I was able to get it to the receivers.”
George Vomvolakis added to his outstanding performance with a 12-yard first-half touchdown run and senior Ian Kim ran it into the end zone in the second half from 2-yards out for the victors.
“When all the facets on offense are clicking and 11 guys are doing the right thing, good things are going to happen,” Morello said.

Senior Brandon Boone also played quarterback late in the second half for Greenwich, which travels to FCIAC rival St. Joseph on Oct. 28. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
“I think this is one of the best defensive performances at Greenwich High I’ve ever seen or played in,” Cardinals senior linebacker Jaden Scott said. “We knew coming in the game, they had a really good run game. I think we have the best run defense in the state and I think we can match up against anyone week in and week out.
“There are 11 people on that field and we all played as one unit,” Scott continued. “There were no mental or physical mistakes out there and we were well-prepared for this game.”
Despite holding a commanding first-half lead, there was no letdown in the Cardinals during the second half against the Eagles.
“We knew they were a great team and all great teams have a motor and that’s not going to stop when they go down,” Insinga said. “We wanted to keep pounding them and keep pounding and that’s what we did and we came out on top.”
Morello also likes what he sees from the squad’s offense, which continues to flourish.
“I think we’re really starting to hit our stride,” he said. “We’re keeping defenses off balance.”
