Two recent games resulted in two more impressive wins for the Sacred Heart Greenwich field hockey team.
The Tigers topped Westminster School on the road in Massachusetts on Thursday, 3-2, after defeating Greens Farms Academy at home on Monday, 4-0. Those two victories ran Sacred Heart’s winning streak to 10 games and improved its overall record to an outstanding 12-1.
In Thursday’s well-earned win against host Westminster, senior tri-captain registered two goals and one assist to pace the Tigers. After a scoreless first quarter, Westminster took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Talia Ondy with 13:10 remaining in the quarter.
At the 10:38 mark of the second quarter, Sacred Heart Greenwich tied the score at 1-1 on Nemec’s goal. With 8:31 left in the second quarter, Kinglsey Ely scored off an assist from Nemec, putting SHG on top, 2-1.
Westminster knotted the score at 2-2 32 seconds into the fourth quarter when Sophia Peterson tallied. Nemec notched the game-winner with 8:31 to play in the final quarter.
“We are very pleased with how the team fought hard today,” SHG coach Alex Gheorghe said. “We are very happy with the overall results in New England. For such a young team, the results have been extraordinary. We’d like to congratulate the team for an almost perfect season.”
Against Greens Farms Academy, Skylar Stewart tallied twice in the first quarter, with both assists going to Nemec. In the second quarter, Nemec scored at the 6:31 mark. Elle Corcoran sealed Sacred Heart’s scoring with 11:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Teresa Harkins made four saves in the winning effort.
“GFA came out to play today and gave us a good battle,” Gheorghe said. “We managed to score on a few set pieces and that gave us an advantage. “Overall, we are pleased with the outcome.”
