Brunswick defeats water polo rival Greenwich at Mehra Natatorium

Two standout water polo programs competed against each other for the third time this fall, as Brunswick School and Greenwich High School renewed their rivalry yet again – this time at Brunswick’s Mehra Natatorium this past Friday.

The Bruins and Cardinals faced each other in the championship game of the Beast of the East Tournament in Pennsylvania last month, then dueled in the title game of the Cardinal Tournament earlier this month. Brunswick won the previous two meetings, resulting in titles for coach Ulmis Iordache’s team and Friday, before a big crowd at Brunswick’s Mehra Natatorium, the Bruins earned their third win against the Cardinals.

Senior captain Ryan Ohl and junior Adam Blum scored six goals apiece to power Brunswick past Greenwich, 19-13. Junior Emil Sogaard-Srikrishnan added five goals in the winning effort.

Sophomore goaltender JR Lindberg registered four saves for the Bruins, who improved their record to 21-3-1 with their fourth straight victory. Brunswick defeated Greenwich, 16-11, in the championship game of the Beast of the East Tournament last month, then edged the Cardinals, 9-8, in the title game of the Cardinal Tournament on Oct. 7.

Senior Thomas Ewald and sophomore Callum Walker recorded one goal apiece for Brunswick, which will soon compete in the NEPSAC Championships, which begins on Nov. 11. at Phillip Andover Academy.

The Bruins have won eight straight NEPSAC titles, dating back to 2014 and most recently, in 2022. There was no NEPSAC champion in 2014 due to COVID-19 modifications and regulations.

Coached by James Ramaley, Greenwich recently had a successful stay in California, where it participated in the Steve Pal Memorial Tournament in Irvine, California.

The Cardinals went on to earn an impressive third-place finish at the Steve Pal Memorial Tournament, registering a record of 3-1. On its Senior Night recently, Greenwich was victorious, defeating Greenwich Country Day School.

Greenwich’s record is 18-4 on the season. The Cardinals’ final game is Nov. 5 against CT Premier at Chelsea Piers Connecticut in Stamford.

In the Brunswick Game, junior goalie Leo DiLascia had five saves, for GHS. On offense, senior tri-captain Chris Killeen, senior tri-captain Csongor Bartuszek, junior Luke Mendelsohn and sophomore Robert Norell led the way with two goals apiece for the Cardinals.

Senior tri-captain Santi DiComo, senior Andrew Lowe, senior Felix Flakstad, junior Jake Melley and sophomore Charlie Koven each chipped in a goal apiece to complete the scoring for the Cardinals.

Prior to playing in the NEPSAC Championships, the Bruins will visit Suffield Academy on Saturday, where they will play Suffield and Choate Rosemary Hall.
