Greenwich Academy’s field hockey team’s Senior Day this past Saturday featured a game against a tough Westminster School squad and it was a back-and-forth matchup that went into overtime.

Unfortunately for Greenwich Academy, the overtime goal went to Westminster, which registered a hard-fought 3-2 win in a NEPSAC game.

“We played a tight game against a talented and strong Westminster team,” GA coach Jamie Brower said. “They had a lot of good players up the middle and were able to get a few shots at goal, as well as a number of corners against us. Our defensive corner unit played an outstanding game.”

Greenwich Academy took a 1-0 lead against Westminster on a goal by Busler with 13:13 remaining in the second period. Assisting on the goal for GA were Caldero and junior Lavinia Cartellieri.

The Gators held their one-goal lead until the fourth quarter. At the 14:08 mark of the fourth quarter, Westminster tied the score with a goal. GA responded with a goal from Georgia Schmitz to take a 2-1 edge with 5:03 left in the final quarter.

Westminster came back though, knotting the score with a goal with just 2:29 to go in the fourth quarter. Drawing a penalty corner, visiting Westminster scored with 1:45 remaining in overtime to earn the win. Persia Shipman turned in a strong performance in goal for the Gators, making 13 saves.

Greenwich Academy paid tribute to its four seniors – Brooke Bertrand, Caroline Busler, Gigi Caldero and Devan Grills – during its special Senior Day ceremony.

“We are grateful to our four seniors for their dedication to the program and wish them all the best as they continue their journey,” Brower said.

Busler, a captain, along with Bertrand, will play field hockey at Amherst College next year and Caldero will continue her field hockey career at Yale University.

GA got back on the winning track after their close loss versus Westminster. The Gators traveled to Kent School on Monday and posted a 3-2 victory. Up next for GA is a matchup against Deerfield Academy on Saturday at Trinity College at 5:30 p.m. Greenwich Academy will then compete in the FAA Tournament semifinals, beginning on Nov. 8.
