Three second-half goals led the Greenwich Academy soccer team to one impressive win on Monday.
The Gators used a three-goal second half to earn a tough 3-0 victory over host Greenwich Country Day School in the quarterfinal-round of the FAA Tournament.
Greenwich Academy entered the FAA Tournament as the No. 6 seed, while Greenwich Country Day School was seeded third. After a hard-fought scoreless first half between the Gators and Tigers, GA broke through offensively in the second half.
Gianna DeBono scored the game’s first goal with a one-touch finish off a corner kick from Lola Tirabassi with 25 minutes remaining, giving Greenwich Academy a 1-0 lead.
Tirabassi tallied the second goal, converting a shot from distance that went over the GCDS goalie’s head into the upper corner of the goal, making it 2-0.
With five minutes remaining, Ruby Montanez sealed the win for GA, scoring on a header off a cross from Chloe Huh, putting the Gators on top, 3-0.
Greenwich Country Day School entered the tournament matchup with a record of 6-3-2 in the FAA. Greenwich Academy had a 5-4-2 mark and will now play in Wednesday’s FAA semifinals against second-seeded Greens Farms Academy at 2 p.m.
“It was an incredible team performance,” Greenwich Academy coach Kate Sands said. “All of the things that we’ve been working on this season came together out on the field yesterday. We defended as a unit, we were creative and unpredictable in the attack and we did a good job keeping possession and switching the field. I was so proud of the whole team and the effort they demonstrated.”
