Sacred Heart Greenwich soccer team cruises past Master School in FAA Tournament quarterfinal-round

Sacred Heart Greenwich’s soccer team opened the FAA Tournament in dominant fashion, generating goals quickly in a highly impressive 9-1 win over visiting Masters School in the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Sacred Heart, which sports a perfect 11-0 record against FAA opponents, hosts fifth-seeded St. Luke’s School today at 2 p.m. in the FAA Tournament semifinals.

Sophomore midfielder Anna Fullerton recorded a hat trick, while junior forward Eva Wilkerson and sophomore forward Dalia Si-Ahmed registered two goals apiece for the Tigers, who seized control of the game early on.

“The girls were excited and came out of the blocks strong,” Sacred Heart coach Stuart Smith said. “I’ve never seen my team start so quickly.”

Fullerton’s goal off an assist from Si-Ahmed gave SHG a 1-0 lead on Masters 7:51 into the first half. Si-Ahmed then scored off an assist by Wilkerson, giving SHG a 2-0 advantage at the 10:45 mark of the opening half.

The Fullerton-Si-Ahmed combination created another goal, as Fullerton tallied in the 12th minute off a Si-Ahmed pass, making it 3-0.

“We followed up with three quick goals in the next five minutes to be three goals up after just 12 minutes,” Smith noted. “We never score goals early, so this was a relief.”

After a goal by Masters’ Julissa Casiano in the 25th minute, it was all SHG. Senior forward Madison Hart scored off a Wilkerson pass in the 42nd minute, then Wilkerson notched a goal off a Madison Hart assist 43:40 into the game.

Fullerton posted her second goal, with Si-Ahmed getting the assist in the 50th minute, then Wilkerson scored again, with Fullerton assisting on the tally. Si-Ahmed converted a shot in the 63rd minute and junior forward Madison Hartnett scored off a pass from sophomore Michaela White to cap the Tigers’ high scoring day.

“At haltime, the girls were eager to score more,” Smith said. “We talked about a few things we could improve and the team executed them perfectly in the second half. The goals came in five-minute bursts, we would score one and it would give us a boost in confidence to then quickly find another.”

“There were many strong performances, but Anna, Eva, Dalia and Madison were exceptional in attack,” Smith continued. “It was really encouraging to see us put our chances away and make the game comfortable. This gives us great confidence as we move into the next round of the tournament.”

Sophomore Olivia Figueiredo and senior Victoria Hart combined to make five saves for Sacred Heart, which has a record of 15-2-1 overall.
