Sacred Heart Greenwich entered today’s FAA Field Hockey Tournament semifinal-round game against St. Luke’s undefeated in the FAA and it didn’t waste any time in showing that it was going to keep its perfect league record intact.

An impressive six-goal surge in the first quarter propelled top-seeded Sacred Heart Greenwich past visiting fourth-seeded St. Luke’s, 8-0, in the FAA semifinals.

Sacred Heart (8-0 FAA) hosts second-seeded rival Greenwich Academy (7-1 FAA) in Friday’s FAA Tournament final. Greenwich Academy earned a return trip to the tournament’s title game by topping third-seeded Greens Farms Academy, 5-0.

Against St. Luke’s today, Sacred Heart scored six goals during a 12:10 span in the first quarter. Junior captain Charly Nemec opened the scoring, tallying 27 seconds into the opening quarter. Elle Corcoran registered a goal off a Nemec assist with 10:54 remaining in the first quarter, then Xan Collins converted a shot at the 9:31 mark of the quarter, making it 3-0.

Collins’ second goal came with 7:10 to go in the first quarter, giving SHG a 4-0 lead. Kingsley Ely assisted on the goal. Corcoran added another first-quarter goal, as did Nemec.

Corcoran scored off a pass from Ely in the third quarter and Nemec tallied off an assist from senior captain Payton Sfreddo in the fourth period. Nemec and Corcoran each recorded hat tricks for the victors. Teresa Harkins made one save in the win. Jemma Gordon had seven saves for St. Luke’s.

“We were excited to play in the FAA semifinal,” SHG coach Alex Gheorghe said. “It is always good to start with a big win, as this was our last preparation for Friday, the FAA final. We would like to congratulate Greenwich Academy for making it to the final, we are looking forward to a great game.”
