
Lily Lyons not only won the New England Prep School Track Association Division I cross country race at Loomis Chaffee School this past weekend, she did so in record-setting fashion.
A Greenwich Academy sophomore, Lyons finished first in the 5000-meter race at the NEPSTA Division I Girls Varsity Cross Country Championships with a course-record time of 18:15 at Loomis Chaffee School’s course this past Saturday in Windsor, Connecticut.
Lyons, who capped a sensational season for Greenwich Academy, finished ahead of second-place finisher Tenley Nelson, a Phillips Exeter Academy senior, by six seconds. The NEPSTA Division I girls race included 96 finishers and Lyons once again this season, showcased her speed and endurance.
Senior Maddy Lee also had an outstanding meet for Greenwich Academy. Lee capped her sparkling cross country career for the Gators by placing sixth at the New England Division I Championships with a time of 18:59. Lee’s performance was a personal-record time.
Greenwich Academy placed 10th in the team standings at the NEPSTA Division I Championships with a score of 235 points. Phillips Exeter Academy captured the team title (67 points), edging runner-up Phillips Andover Academy (68 points). Host Loomis Chaffee placed third (78 points).
Grace Sullivan, a senior, ran a personal-record time of 21:39 at the New England championships, while teammate Isabel Pombo, a sophomore, crossed the finish line in 22:52. Casey Duval, a junior, finished the race in 23:40, while teammate Aya Ragab, a freshman, posted a time of 23:43.
The NEPSTA Division I Championships was held after the FAA Cross Country Championships, which took place on Oct. 31 at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. Lyons earned the gold medal at the FAA Championships, winning the 3.1-mile race in a personal-record time of 18:11. Lee registered a second-place finish at the FAA Championships, posting a time of 19:08.

Lyons and Lee each earned All-FAA First Team honors.
“Lily Lyons absolutely crushed it and Maddy Lee was fleet of foot as always,” GA coach Jane Finch said.
Lyons and Lee’s performances led Greenwich Academy to the team title at the FAA Championships. The Gators recorded a team score of 54 points, while rival Hopkins School finished second in the team standings (63), followed by Greens Farms Academy (91) and Sacred Heart Greenwich (97). Greenwich Country Day School finished fifth in the team standings (105).
Junior Charlotte Bacigalupo of Sacred Heart Greenwich placed third in the FAA race, clocking in at 20:14 and Gisele Putka, a Greenwich Country Day School eighth grader, was fourth (20:32). Mary Putka, a Greenwich Country Day School sophomore, placed ninth in 20:58, while Sacred Heart senior Ava Lillis placed 12th in 21:35.
Sullivan (14th, 21:57) and Pombo (17th, 22:33) each had top-20 finishes for GA. Those placing 11-20 earned All-FAA Second Team honors. Freshman Annie Noble of Greenwich Country Day was 16th (22:26).
Ragab (23:17), Duval (23:28) and sophomore Nadia Kowalski (23:20) were 22nd, 26th and 27th for GA, respectively at the FAA Championships. Sacred Heart senior Helena Randolph finished 24th (23:27).
GA’s runners also excelled in the junior varsity race at the FAA Cross Country Championships. Olivia MacEachern (fifth place), Annie McGraw (sixth place), Fiona Reilly (eighth place), Paula Zanol (ninth), and Olivia Martucci (10th) were the top-10 finishers for GA and they each posted personal-record times.
“It was truly a fantastic day for GA XC,” Finch said.
