
Champions again.
Title No. 2 was claimed by the Greenwich High School girls swimming/diving team Tuesday night and it’s second championship of the season came in ultra-convincing fashion.
After impressively winning the FCIAC championship, Greenwich cruised to victory at the CIAC Class LL Championships, capturing the team title with an eye-opening 925 team points.
Ridgefield was the runner-up in the team standings (831 points), followed by Glastonbury (434 points), Norwalk/McMahon (396 points) and Fairfield Ludlowe (367). Tuesday night’s victory, before a large crowd at Wesleyan University in Middletown, marked Greenwich’s 22nd CIAC Class LL team championship. The Cardinals have also won eight CIAC Class L titles, so they have 30 class championships to their collection.
Greenwich now sets its sights on winning another CIAC State Open title. The Cardinals last won the team title at the State Open Championships in 2021 and have 20 State Open championships to their resume, giving them 50 state titles overall. The State Open Swimming Championships is scheduled to be held on Sunday at Yale University with a starting time of 1 p.m.
At Tuesday’s Class LL Championships, Greenwich won five events and produced numerous standout performances on its way to swimming away with another team title. The meet began with freshman Julia Kozma, senior Sydney Jee, junior Sena Bozkurt and junior Sofie Wang combining to win the 200-yard medley relay title for the Cardinals with a time of 1:45.73 – giving the squad 60 significant points in the team standings.

Ridgefield placed second in the 200 medley relay, posting a time of 1:47.48 and Fairfield Ludlowe was third (1:48.64). Greenwich senior Payton Foster, who will continue her swimming career at Harvard University next year, claimed the Class LL gold medal in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 2:01.80, giving the Cardinals 30 team points. Fairfield Ludlowe senior Kathleen Murray finished second in 2:04.55, while Jee gave GHS a third-place finish (2:07.91).
Foster’s second individual victory at the Class LL finals came in the 500-yard freestyle. She swam to a winning time of 4:59.11. Ridgefield sophomore Ava Ward placed second with a time of 5:04.06 and Greenwich had a 3-4 finish, with freshman Ellison Charette taking third 5:06.14 and sophomore Melissa Geiger finishing fourth in 5:11.50. For Greenwich, freshman Izzie Nassa was 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:29.63).
Bozkurt was the Class LL winner in the 100 backstroke, registering a time of 57.41 seconds. Ella Gussen, a Fairfield Ludlowe sophomore, was the runner-up (58.54) and Staples senior Elizabeth Turner took third (59.89).
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Wang, freshman Kensie Warden, sophomore Wesley Wales and Foster teamed up to win the gold medal in an All-American consideration time of 1:35.82. Ridgefield placed second in the 200 freestyle relay, earning an All-American consideration time of 1:36.45.

“The 200 free relay was the fastest in school history,” Greenwich coach Brendan Heller said. “The race was electric and Payton brought it home for us in a great anchor.”
The 200 freestyle saw Wales lead the Cardinals with a fifth-place finish (1:55.76), while Charette took sixth in 1:55.82 and teammate Ainsley Sahrbeck, a sophomore, was seventh (1:59.39). Anabelle Guarnera, a senior, placed 10th for GHS in 2:00.82. Ridgefield sophomore Ava Ward captured the 200 freestyle title in 1:52.11, while Gussen of Ludlowe was the runner-up in 1:53.50.
Wang had Greenwich’s best finish in the 50-yard freestyle, earning a fourth-place showing in 24.15 seconds. Worden was seventh for GHS in 25.00, while teammate Emma Stehmann, a junior, finished 10th (25.65). Manchester co-op sophomore Riley Anderson won the race in 22.81, follow by Ridgefield junior Lilly Archibald (23.51).
In the Class LL diving finals held on Nov. 9 at Sheehan High School, Greenwich senior Ava Vranos earned the bronze medal, totaling 394.50 points over 11 rounds of competition on the 1-meter diving board.
Kristen Jacks, a sophomore, finished fourth for Greenwich, earning a score of 382.10 points on the diving board at the Class LL finals, while teammate Ellie Scharff, a senior, was fifth (382) and GHS senior Mackenzie Newi took sixth (377.70).
Bozkurt placed third in the 100 butterfly race, clocking in at 56.06 and Geiger was fifth in 59.52 for the Cardinals. Murray of Ludlowe was the Class LL champion in the 100 butterfly (53.98) and Archibald placed second (54.66).
Wang earned the silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle (51.75), which was won by Manchester’s Riley Anderson (50.50, All-American consideration time). Wales gave the Cards a fourth-place finish in the event (53.07) and Worden took fifth (54.18). In the Class LL 100 breaststroke finals, Jee was fifth (1:05.89), junior Michelle Weissler (1:07.92) took eighth, sophomore Isa Guzman placed 11th (1:10.19) and Stehmann finished 12th (1:10.40). Jocelyn Niemcyk, a Manchester co-op senior, won the race in an All-American consideration time of 1:03.62.
The Class LL championship meet concluded with Ridgefield’s Archibald, Bridget Kelly, Keira Giles and Ward winning the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.10. Greenwich’s Foster, Bozkurt, Charette and Wales also posted a sensational time, clocking in at 3:32.38.
