Brunswick School’s varsity wrestling team opened its season in top form, earning a decisive 63-14 dual meet win over host Avon Old Farms School this past Wednesday.
Despite missing several starters from the varsity lineup, the Bruins showed their team depth and came away with a resounding victory over the Winged Beavers.
After a one-year hiatus from the mat, co-captain Kyle Pagnani, a senior, started the Bruins off with a second period pin in the 157-pound match. Co-captain Whip Gorman, a senior, followed with a quick pin for the Bruins in the 165-pound match. Wrestling up at 175 pounds, returning All-New England wrestler Jack Degl, a junior, also earned a first-period pinfall triumph for Brunswick.
Brunswick first-year freshman wrestler MJ Maraglino bumped up a weight class against an All-New England 190-pound opponent from Avon Old Farms. Maraglino did not concede a pin, eventually losing by technical fall in a hard-fought match.
In the upper weight classes, at 215 lb. junior Declan Murray was dominant in his 215-pound match against Avon Old Farms, earning a second-period pin.
In the lower weigh classes, freshman Owen Bartoszek was victorious for the Bruins against an experienced opponent in the 106-pound bout. Bruins junior Christian Yanoti, an All-New England selection last season, won his match at 113 pounds by forfeit.
In the 120-pound matchup, freshman Michael Ligouri eked out a 7-5 win in his first varsity match for Brunswick. Also making his debut in a Brunswick singlet, was freshman Marco Sethi, who earned a first-period pinfall triumph (126-pound match). Co-captain and returning All-New England wrestler Michael Accetta, a senior quickly pinned his Avon Old Farms foe (132-pound matchup), as did Bruins teammate Ethan Phelps, a sophomore, in his 138-pound match.
Brunswick’s varsity team returned to Avon Old Farms School for the Holiday Duals on Saturday, while the Varsity B team traveled to the Skiff Mountain Scuffle at Marvelwood School on Saturday.
The Bruins finished in second place at the eight-team Avon Old Farms Holiday Duals, registering a record of 3-1. Brunswick edged Trinity Pawling School, 34-33, defeated Hopkins School, 51-21 and cruised past Pomfret School, 75-6.
Going 3-0 in the first three matches of the tournament, advanced Brunswick to the finals against Northfield Mount Hermon School. In the finals, the Bruins lost a tough match to Northfield Mount Hermon, 39-30.
Brunswick, which sports a record of 4-1, travels to Canterbury School on Wednesday to test its skills in a tri-meet.
