Brunswick School’s ice hockey team has finished the first third of its 2023-2024 season with an impressive record of 5-2-1, including a victory at the Kevin Mutch Hockey Tournament, recently, at St. Sebastian’s School in Needham, Massachusetts.
The Bruins captured the title at the Kevin Mutch Hockey Tournament with a thrilling 3-1 win over host St. Sebastian’s in the tournament’s championship game on Dec. 17.
The visiting Bruins came out flying and played with a purpose in the first half of action in the tournament’s title game against St. Sebastian’s, racing out to a 3-0 lead after just eight minutes of play, behind two goals from senior Brendan Giles and one in between from senior Charlie Vincent.
The Arrows swung a little of the momentum back to their side on a 5-vs.-3 power play goal after consecutive penalties late in the period put the Bruins down for 1:53. Brunswick held a 3-1 after 22:30 of play.
The second period saw more of the same, as penalties allowed St. Sebastian’s to cut Brunswick’s lead to 3-2 with 5:38 to go in the period.
On a scrum in front of the net, the whistle blew and the Sebastian players’ hands went into the air, but the officials declared a penalty shot, as a Brunswick defender had kept the puck out of the net with his hand.
Senior goalie Will Baker, who was turned in another sensational performance between the pipes, stood tall and stopped St. Sebastian’s best player on the penalty shot attempt, keeping the Bruins ahead by one goal with one minute still remaining.
Brunswick didn’t allow any more chances and proceeded to earn its second straight tournament title.
After losing its opening game of the season Brunswick has been unbeaten in its last seven games to go into a little break with a 5-1-2 record. Making their start to the season even more impressive is the fact that the Bruins have yet to play one home game.
After the Holiday, Brunswick remains on the road. The Bruins wil play several games at Belmont Hill School in Massachusetts, beginning with a game against Belmont Hill at the Belmont Hill Tournament on December 28. Coach Mike Kennedy’s Bruins will then skate against Brewster Academy, also on Dec. 28, at Belmont Hill, before playing St. Francis High School on Dec. 29 at Belmont Hill.
Here are some photos of Brunswick’s game against The Rivers School at the Kevin Mutch Hockey Tournament. The Bruins registered a 4-1 win over The Rivers School in the first round of the tournament. They defeated St. Andrew’s College from Canada, 5-3, in their second game of the tournament.
