Brunswick wrestling team pins Greenwich Country Day School, Salisbury School, Trinity-Pawling, improves record to 9-1

Brunswick School’s wrestling team continued its standout season, winning all 11 contested matches in a home dual meet versus neighborhood opponent Greenwich Country Day School, recently. The Bruins’ 70-6 victory against the Tigers raised their record on the season to an impressive 9-1.

Eight Brunswick wrestlers pinned their respective opponents: senior Michael Accetta, sophomore Ethan Phelps, senior Asher Benn, junior Jack Degl, junior Will O’Reilly, sophomore Jake Greene, junior Declan Murray and junior Christian Yanoti.

Sophomore Alec Harned bounced back from a tough loss in his previous match after being bumped up to 150 pounds. Harned posted a 4-1 win by decision against Greenwich Country Day.

Quinn McGraw, a sophomore, battled hard against a tough GCDS opponent to earn a 5-4 win by decision, while Marco Sethi, a freshman, earned another win by an 11-0 major decision.

At the extreme ends of the line-up at 106 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively, freshman Owen Bartoszek and sophomore Michael Marini won their respective matches by forfeit for Brunswick. The Bruins had to forfeit the 120-pound weight class against Greenwich Country Day.

At a home tri-meet on Jan. 6, Brunswick beat an improved Salisbury School team, 63-16, and then pulled off a come-from-behind win over Trinity-Pawling that came down to the final match.

In the opening dual meet versus Salisbury, Brunswick won 11 of the 14 bouts including seven by pinfall. The pins came from Yanoti, Sethi, Accetta, a co-captain, Harned, Benn, Degl and Marini. Additionally, Greene won his match by a 5-3 decision.

In early December, the Bruins edged Trinity Pawling by a single point (34-33). Accetta started the Bruins off against Trinity Pawling with a 4-1 win in the 132-pound matchup. That win was followed by a second- period pin from junior Patrick O’Donahue.

The lead changed quickly though, as Trinity Pawling won by pinfall in the 144 and 150-pound matches. Degl (165-pound match) wrestled a smart match to win by decision, 5-3. However, Trinity Pawling won three straight bouts (175-pound, 190-pound, 215-pound) to seize a 34-12 lead in the match over the Bruins.

Trailing by 22 points, Brunswick needed to win the last five matches to prevail against Trinity Pawling. In the heavyweight match, Marini continued his impressive day on the mats by pinning his opponent who had beaten him twice at a tournament in December.

Owen Bartoszek ’27 and Arjun Kolluri ’27 had their hands raised at 106 lb. and 113 lb., before Yanoti bumped up to pin his T-P opponent at 120 lb. to put Brunswick back in the lead, 36-34.

Therefore, it all came down to the final match of the day, and Brunswick’s hopes rested in the hands of a freshman. To win the meet for the team, Sethi would have to beat an opponent from Trinity-Pawling who had beaten him by a 10-2 major decision in early December.

Sethi got the crucial first takedown and added another followed by a ride out to end the opening period. Sethi then rode out his opponent for the entire second period, sending things to the final period with a score of 4-1. Sethi took bottom, reversed his opponent, and ultimately finished the match with a gritty 6-2 win by decision.

It was one of the more thrilling team wins to ever happen in the Ostrye Wrestling Gymnasium. Brunswick took the match against Trinity Pawling, 39-34, continuing its highly successful season.
