
Excelling in each event, the Brunswick School swimming/diving team was second to none at the recent FAA Championships.
The Bruins won seven events and made their mark in each competition on their way to winning the team title at the 2024 FAA Championships. Brunswick won the FAA championship with a team score of 189 points. Hopkins School placed second with 130 points, while Hamden Hall Country Day School finished third (77 points). Masters School was fourth (53 points), followed by Greenwich Country Day School (47) at the FAA Championships, held at Hopkins School in New Haven.
Ryan Ohl won two individual events for Brunswick, winning the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke titles. Ohl finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.66. Rory O’Connor placed second in 1:46.60, Peter Saunders was third (1:49.40) and Callum Walker took fourth (1:50.63), respectively, for the Bruins in the 200-yard freestyle. James Cosgrove of Greenwich Country Day School placed seventh in the 200 freestyle in (1:52.72).
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Ohl garnered the gold medal with a time of 1:00.46. Teammate Evan Ripp finished third in 1:03.91 and Callum Holl, also of the Bruins, was sixth (1:06.14). Nico Della Pietra of Greenwich Country Day took seventh (1:07.63) and Brunswick’s James Walker was eighth (1:08.40).
Ben Wu took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 1:56.06. Colten Trepp of Hopkins finished second (1:59.23), while Jonathan Packard of the Bruins placed third with a time of 2:04.80. Reese Veliska placed fourth for GCDS in the race, posting a time of 2:06.80.
In the FAA diving finals, Max Pacifico captured the first-place medal, earning 269.16 points on the 1-meter board for the Bruins. Jehan Mody from Hamden Hall finished second (193.53) and Leo Dottori of Hamden Hall was third (177.30).
Brunswick’s Peter Saunders had a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle, registering a time of 50.07 seconds. Teammate Ben Atkinson finished fourth (50.12) in the race, which was won by Matthew Woolbert of Hopkins School (51.25).
Rory O’Connor of the Bruins touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the race in 4:48.65. Ben Wu placed second for the Bruins in 4:48.79, while James Cosgrove was fourth for GCDS (4:55.70). Evan Ripp was sixth for Brunswick (5:03.11). Chase Elliott of the Bruins was the FAA 100 backstroke champion, earning a time of 55.30. Jonathan Packard, also of ‘Wick, had a second-place finish (56.40), while Greenwich Country Day’s Reese Velishka (56.78). The Bruins’ John Landers took fourth in the event, clocking in at 57.24.
The FAA Championships began with Brunswick’s Jonathan Packard, Evan Ripp, Julio Ubina and John Landers combined for a second-place finish in 1:44.74. Hopkins won the race (1:40.20). James Walker, Callum Walker, JP Lavin and Neven Yechely were third for the Bruins (1:44.74). Ubina had Brunswick’s best finish in the 50-yard freestyle (22.92), which was won by Hopkins’ Matthew Woolbert (22.72).
Ubina also finished second in the 100 butterfly (54.65). Chase Elliott gave the Bruins a third-place finish in the butterfly (54.74). Brunswick’s Preston Elms was fifth (58.98). Hunter Amen of Greenwich Country Day was sixth (1:06.49). Jack Morningstar, Andrew Rodriguez, Ryan Ohl and Ben Wu gave the Bruins a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.36). Hopkins took first in the race (1:28.88).
The FAA Championships concluded with Chase Elliott, Preston Elms, Ben Atkinson and JP Lavin combining to win the 400 freestyle relay for the Bruins in 3:20.16.
