Greenwich High boys tennis team begins season with decisive victories against Brien McMahon, Fairfield Ludlowe

The tennis season has begun in highly successful fashion for Greenwich High School, the defending FCIAC champion.

The Cardinals, who registered a record of 18-0 on their way to winning the FCIAC Tournament championship in 2023, began their 2024 season with 7-0 victories against Brien McMahon and Fairfield Ludlowe.

Greenwich, which defeated rival Darien for the FCIAC Tournament title one season ago, opened its 2024 campaign Monday against visiting Brien McMahon. Winning most of their matches in straight sets, the Cardinals showed their depth in both singles and doubles play.

At first singles, Alexander Salib was victorious for Greenwich, defeating Emerard Charles, 6-0, 6-1. Matthew Hunt won his match at No. 2 singles for Greenwich, topping McMahon’s Arush Rao, 6-2, 6-1.

Tristan Sowter of Greenwich won a tough 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8 match against Redmond Little at No. 3 singles. Greenwich also won at fourth singles, 5-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, Nicholas Frumin and Daniel Lee took their match at the No. 1 spot in straight sets for the Cards, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2, Elias Orrell and Kwon were 6-1, 6-1 winners. Third doubles saw Pierre August/Noah Everett win a 6-0, 6-1 decision.

On Tuesday, Greenwich improved to 2-0 by sweeping host Fairfield Ludlowe in another FCIAC match. Volodymyr Dombrovskyi gave Greenwich a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ludlowe’s Pearson Biggs at No. 1 singles.

At second singles, Manuel Specos Galli posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ludlowe’s Billy Seward. Matthew Hunt won his match at third singles for the Cards, sweeping Riggs Moran, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 4 singles spot, Adam McFarlane won his match for GHS, 8-6.

Harrison Wolfe and Rohan Mittal, who flourished at the No. 1 doubles position in 2023 picked up where they left off last season. The duo were victorious at the top doubles spot for the Cards, 6-0, 6-4. Frumin/Lee were 6-0, 6-1 winners at second doubles, while Orrell/Kwon earned a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3.

Coached by Ray Marschall, Greenwich has won 17 FCIAC Tournament championships and once again, enters the season with plenty of talent and optimism. Up next for the Cardinals is a road match against FCIAC opponent St. Joseph.
