After earning its first win of the season on April 6 against Northwest United Lacrosse, Greenwich High School’s girls lacrosse team produced another sparkling performance when Stamford High School visited Cardinal Stadium April 9 for an FCIAC matchup.

On point at both ends of the field, the Cardinals were successful in their FCIAC-opener against Stamford posting their second straight win, following a season-opening loss to Nyack (N.Y.) High School.

Senior captain Emma Abbazia continued her scoring surge, recording a game-high seven goals to power Greenwich to a 14-6 victory over an improving Stamford High School squad.

“I think it was a nice win, we came in ready for the game and I think we delivered as a team,” said Abbazia, a dynamic all-around player, who will continue her lacrosse career at the University of Maryland next season. ‘We have gone back to practice and worked on the things we needed to work on and now I think we’re on the up.”

Sophomore Dillon McFerran registered two goals and one assist, while junior Aubrey Roth also propelled the attack, tallying twice for the Cardinals (2-1, 1-0 FCIAC play).

“I think we moved the ball really well and we were escalating our plays really well and just spreading out,” McFerran said. “Also the draw, we won a lot of draws.”

Twin sisters Giselle and Sophia DiPietro paced Greenwich’s offense as well, totaling one goal and one assist apiece. Senior captain Mary Kate Frey scored a goal in the winning effort.

Greenwich High School senior Emma Abbazia scored a game-high seven goals in the team’s 14-6 victory vs. Stamford.

“I am really proud of our players who stepped up and competed with a strong Stamford HS program,” Greenwich coach Tara Clough said. “It’s always a close game with Stamford. Annabelle DeGennaro stepped up on some clutch draws early, Emma Abbazia left everything on the field as usual and was an impact player everywhere.”

Senior Sydney Rikardsen scored two goals and senior Madison Sweeney also tallied twice for the Black Knights. Seniors Carolyn and Ella O’Halloran added one goal apiece for Stamford.

Abbazia had eight draw controls, DeGennaro had three draw controls and Abbazia had three caused turnovers for the victors.

“Dillon McFerron was relentless on acquiring every possession,” Clough noted. “Katie Janis was effective in starting the offense. My focus was on implementing a few defensive strategies and taking care of the ball in transition. Our ball movement continues to progress. It was a total team effort and we are thrilled.”

Today, Greenwich upped its record to 3-1 with its third straight win, a 12-3 triumph on the road against non-conference opponent Weston.

The Cards return to FCIAC action tomorrow (Saturday) with a road matchup against Wilton at 2 p.m.

“We have some big games coming up like Wilton and New Canaan, but I think we’re ready for them,” Abbazia said. “They’re a good team, but I think we’re up for the challenge.”

Senior defender Grace O’Connor, also a senior captain, helped anchor Greenwich’s defensive effort versus Stamford.

“I thought it was a really good game, our teamwork was good and our offense definitely got better at the end,” O’Connor said. “We have all been positive and working together and it’s great to see us working together like that.”

“The positivity that we showed was great, there was nothing negative on the field,” O’Connor continued. ‘Everyone was cheering for each other and also our ball movement on offense was great.”

Said McFerran: “I think we’ve been moving the ball quicker and better than we had earlier.”
