Capitalizing on the extra possessions they received courtesy of Lane Critchell, Greenwich High’s boys lacrosse team posted a well-earned 9-6 road victory over Fairfield Ludlowe in an FCIAC game held on Tuesday.
Critchell, a senior captain, took 18 faceoffs for the Cardinals against the Falcons and won 16 of them, enabling the team to gain key possessions, which resulted in goals.
“Lane had another great game and basically controlled the possession battle,” Greenwich coach Bobby Lutz said. “Ludlowe was a gritty team tonight. They were physical, played with confidence, and won the ground ball battle.”
The triumph put the breaks on a two-game losing streak for Greenwich, which was coming off a dramatic 12-11 loss to Bronxville (N.Y.) High School. The Cardinals have a record of 5-4 on the season and have lost two one-goal games and one game by two goals, so they have been in a lot of close matchups thus far this spring.
In Tuesday’s game against host Fairfield Ludlowe, junior midfielder/captain Colin Zeller tallied five goals and one assist to pace Greenwich’s offense.
“They tried shutting off Zeller, but he did a great job getting his looks,” Lutz noted.
Senior midfielder Jimmy Flinn recorded two goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Jake Duda added one goal and one assist for GHS. Junior Conrad Burki assisted on two goals, while junior attack Dean Kim had one goal and one assist to also pace the winning effort. Junior attackman Mikey Brescia assisted on a goal, while senior captain Adam Kim also had an assist for the visiting Cardinals.
Jack Hamel and Ilan Amaro combined to make 15 saves for Greenwich, with Hamel stopping eight shots.
Up next for Greenwich is a road game against non-conference opponent Weston tomorrow at 6 p.m. The Cards will then host FCIAC rival Staples High School on Saturday at 11 a.m.
