Greenwich High School’s baseball team earned its biggest win of the season to date on Monday, edging Trumbull, which entered the matchup as the No. 1-ranked squad in the state, 4-3.
The visiting Cardinals, who improved their record to 7-6 on the season, trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, then scored two runs in the final inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals were powered by senior pitcher Tommy Passamano, who threw seven impressive innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four batters to earn the win.
Passamano went 2 for 4 with one run scored, including a key hit in the seventh inning.
“Anytime you beat the No. 1 team in the state, it always gives you the confidence that you can compete against anyone,” Greenwich coach Adrian Arango said. “When that No. 1 team is also a program like Trumbull who has such a rich baseball tradition and a great coach in Phil (Pacelli), it gives you the belief you can beat anyone.”
Junior third baseman Troy Goodwin went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks, while senior catcher Cody Baker had one hit, one run scored and drew a walk for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five games.
Emmy Bulis, a junior outfielder, had one hit and one RBI, as did junior second baseman Aidan Brehm for the Cardinals, who received an RBI from junior Hank van Schaik.
“I’m so proud of how the boys fought the entire game all the way to the end,” Arango said. “Every time it looked like maybe it wasn’t going to be our day someone did something to start a rally. It was really a true team win.”
Greenwich scored one run in the fourth inning, one run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh against the Eagles. The host Eagles had a run apiece in the first and second innings, then added a run in the fourth inning.
The Cardinals finished the game with seven hits and committed only one error on their way to the hard-fought win. Passamano threw 101 pitches in seven innings, 66 of which were for strikes. Trumbull has a record of 11-2 and now ranked No. 2 behind Southington in the CIAC Class LL state rankings.
“Tommy was outstanding,” Arango noted. “Senior captain stepping up in a huge game and throwing a gem. He has a ton of varsity experience on the mound and has pitched in a lot of big games. He is someone we are confident in and can rely on in these big FCIAC matchups against top teams like Trumbull.”
Up next for Greenwich is a road game against St. Joseph tomorrow at 4 p.m.
