Greenwich High School’s girls rugby team traveled to Trumbull to take on the Eagles now in their 2nd season of fielding a Division 1 girls’ rugby team. The Cardinals turned in a dominant performance, posting a 42-0 win for their second victory of the season.
From the first whistle, the Lady Cardinals dominated all phases of play. Greenwich camped out in the Trumbull half of the field and eventually the possession paid off when junior flyhalf Lauren Huang went over to score a try in the 8th minute. This was quickly followed by tries from sophomore flanker Georgia Petz and freshman center Maddie Jones. None of the conversions were successful, making the halftime score 15-0.

The second half was much the same as the first with Trumbull rarely getting into Greenwich’s half. Lauren Huang with her pace and direct style of running, proved too much for Trumbull’s defense – scoring two more tries. Senior captain center Lara Olmsted’s try came after a good counterattack from the backline. The scoring was wrapped up by a try from freshman scrumhalf Gabby Aliaga which was converted by Lauren Huang.
There were very good performances all over the field, notably the forwards set a solid platform for the backs to capitalize on. Notability junior prop Vera Zibilich provided plenty of passion, relentless go-forward ball, and solid defense. Senior lock Emma Peck dominated at the lineouts.

After the game, senior captain Ruby Lamkin spoke about the forwards saying: “We played well and worked keeping our feet into contact, committing to rucks, and changing our lanes while running.”
Lara Olmsted added, “We have a new group of girls in the back line and I think we meshed together well using our line speed to get the ball out wide. We were aggressive, made our tackles, came up on defense, and was very proud of our performance.”

Greenwich’s next game is at Southington on May 2.
