In FCIAC baseball action, surging Greenwich tops Stamford at home, falls to Ridgefield on the road

John McHugh of Greenwich threw five stellar innings to earn the win for the Cardinals against Stamford, recently.

Splitting games so far this week, the Greenwich High School baseball team is in prime position for the postseason.

Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Cardinals are 9-2 in the FCIAC, good for second place in the conference and have a record of 10-7 overall. The Cardinals visit FCIAC foe Norwalk Saturday at 2 p.m. in a significant conference matchup.

On Monday, Greenwich hosted Stamford at Havemeyer Park and earned a 4-2 win. Senior right-hander/captain John McHugh pitched five innings for the win.

McHugh allowed two runs on only two hits in his five innings on the mound. He struck out three batters and issued only one walk. Senior captain Tommy Passamano pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

The Cards scored two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and another run in the fifth against the Black Knights. Greenwich finished the game with six hits, while Stamford had three hits.

At the plate, junior third baseman Troy Goodwin went 1 for 3 with one run scored, junior second baseman Aidan Brehm was 1 for 3 with one RBI and junior Max Marek went 2 for 3 with one RBI and one runs scored for Greenwich.

In their road game against Ridgefield, the Cardinals led 2-1 until the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Passamano pitched six effective innings for GHS, yielding only one earned run on five hits.

Ridgefield took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Greenwich tied it with a run in the fifth inning, then took a 2-1 lead by scoring in the fifth. McHugh, senior catcher/captain Cody Baker and junior infielder Nick D’Andrea each had one hit for Greenwich, which was held to three hits for the game against Ridgefield, while committing three errors. The Tigers had five hits in the win.

Following their game at Norwalk on Saturday, the Cardinals host Westhill on Monday and Fairfield Warde on Wednesday. The FCIAC Tournament begins on Friday with the quarterfinal-round.
