Perfection was achieved by the Greenwich High School girls tennis team when it defeated visiting Fairfield Warde on May 9, as the win put the finishing touch on another undefeated regular season.
Now, the Cardinals are hoping to enjoy a perfect postseason.
Greenwich’s 7-0 Senior Day victory over Fairfield Warde in its regular season finale capped a dominant 15-0 season in which it swept nine of its opponents.
“I’m very happy with how we’ve played,” Greenwich senior co-captain Kyra Dybas said. “Everyone has worked very hard and I think the scores reflect that.”
“We’re in a tough conference, so to go undefeated it a credit to the team,” Greenwich first-season coach Gerard Sulli said. “The team works very hard.”

Just how dominant have the Cardinals been on the court this season? In matches played so far this spring during their 15 matches, GHS has won 96 out of 104 for a 92 percent winning percentage.
“We’re definitely doing really well, we’re all super motivated and staying motivated,” Cardinals senior co-captain Malena Schraa said. “We have a really positive attitude this year, a really positive team that supports each and I feel that’s what’s made us go so far – everyone supports each other.”
Their 15-0 record gives the Cardinals the No. 1 seed in the FCIAC Tournament which begins tomorrow, May 13. First-seeded Greenwich hosts eighth-seeded Westhill in tomorrow’s 4 p.m. FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals. Last season saw Greenwich finish 16-0 in the regular season, then advance to the FCIAC Tournament semifinals and the CIAC Class LL Tournament finals. In the 2023 Class LL Tournament state final, Greenwich was defeated by New Canaan, 4-2. Overall, GHS went 20-2 in 2023.

The Cardinals are seeking their first state championship since 2009 and first FCIAC Tournament title since 2012.
“I think it’s going to go great,” GHS senior Emily Weinstein said of the upcoming postseason tournaments. “We were undefeated in the regular season, so that brings motivation. After last year we really want it so bad and we all work really hard together as a team.”
In Greenwich’s 7-0 triumph against Fairfield Warde on May 9, Dybas took part in the most competitive match, edging Elisa Tunaru, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, in a marathon matchup at No. 1 singles.
“It was definitely very long she’s a very good player, so it was a very competitive match,” Dybas noted.
Sulli was impressed with how Dybas was once again victorious at first singles.

“It was really close, her opponent played a crafty game, she was very patient,” Sulli said. “Once Kyra adjusted to her opponent’s game and was more patient and was looking for that short ball to put away, she pulled out the match.”
At second singles, sophomore Shining Sun continued her standout season. Sun posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Warde’s Jessica Han. Third singles saw Greenwich sophomore Caitlin Mahoney sweep Ryan Gilman, 6-0, 6-0.
“It was a good match today, I worked on moving my opponent side to side and coming up to the net and putting it away,” Mahoney said. “It’s been such a great season and I think this year we can take it forward to FCIACs and states. It’s been very rewarding, especially watching everyone play and try their hardest.”

Junior Izzy Everett notched a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at fourth singles for the Cardinals, who have shown superior depth in singles competition throughout the season.
In doubles action, Schraa and Weinstein swept another opponent, defeating their Fairfield Warde foes at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-0.
“I think we’ve had good success this year, we’re new partners, so there was a bit of adjustment, but I think we work really well together and we’re happy playing together,” Weinstein said.
Should Greenwich defeat Westhill in Monday’s FCIAC quarterfinals, it will host the tournament’s semifinal-round on Wednesday.

“We want to win so bad and we came so close last season,” Schraa noted. “This year we have a really good lineup and good girls, so we’re excited to go far and hopefully, win both, in FCIACs and states.”
At second doubles in their Senior Day victory against Fairfield Warde, GHS received a 6-0, 6-1 win from junior Yume Inagawa and Cameron Sowter. They topped Francesca Tortorella and Cory Lotstein.
“Overall, we did well,” Inagawa said. “Once we started playing together this season, we were able to give each other positive attitudes. Also, we complement each other really well, so I think I was able to learn a lot from here and I think it worked out well.”

Sowter has successfully adjusted to competing on the varsity level as a freshman.
“In the beginning, it was a little nerve-wracking, before my matches I was nervous,” Sowter said. “But as time went on, I got more comfortable and I’ve just gotten better by the day.”
“I didn’t know what I was going to play coming into the season, but I really like doubles since I have the best partner in the world,” Sowter continued. “We just work really well together and that has helped us become undefeated.”

In the No. 3 doubles match, the duo of junior Emme Pecorin and sophomore Maddy Wilber cruised to another win. The Cardinals tandem won their match, 6-0, 6-0.
“It was a good win, Maddy and I have been doing well this season and we really work well together,” Pecorin said.
“Last year we played together too, so this year we continued our teamwork together and it has really worked out for us,” Wilber noted.

Besides watching his singles players excel, Sulli has been pleased with the consistency and achievements from the squad’s doubles competitors.
“All our doubles teams played very well this year,” he said. “We rotated four and three, so it’s setting up nicely for next season.”
So, now with an undefeated regular season and the No. 1 seed in the FCIAC Tournament on their resume, the Cardinals are seeking to claim the conference championship, before going for the state title.

“As a team, we’ve been very strong this season,” Pecorin said. “We have a lot of good players, we have a lot of good strategy and teamwork. We’ve all worked really hard and this is a clear reflection of us as a team. Last year, we came runner-up at states, so we want to take first this year.”
Said Sowter of the postseason tournaments: “I’m super excited, I know all the other girls have hyped it up and I’m excited to experience it for the first time.”

“We’re always hoping to do better than the previous year, so that is our goal and everyone is excited,” Dybas said of the team’s goals of winning the FCIAC and state tournaments. “I always like a challenge, so it will be exciting.”
