Another match, another decisive win for the Greenwich High School girls tennis team.
This time, the victory took place in the postseason for the Cardinals, who hosted Westhill High School in the quarterfinal-round of the FCIAC Tournament on Monday.
Top-seeded Greenwich was victorious against eighth-seeded Westhill, 5-2, earning a spot in today’s 4:45 p.m. FCIAC semifinals against fourth-seeded Fairfield Ludlowe.

“I’m really proud of how everyone played,” said Greenwich senior captain Kyra Dybas, who has excelled at No. 1 singles. “Everyone is going to have to step it up in the semifinals, but I think we’re ready.”
With their win against the Vikings, the Cardinals raised their record to a perfect 16-0, as they seek their first FCIAC Tournament championship since 2012 and their first state title since the 2009 season.
Greenwich won two of the four singles matches and swept the three doubles match against Westhill. The Vikings’ singles victories came at the first two spots. Westhill’s Isabel Jakes was victorious in three sets against Dybas 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 at first singles.

At second singles, Greenwich’s Shining Sun had to take an AP examination and was unable to play her match at second singles, so Westhill took the match. Sun came afterward to cheer on her teammates that were still playing.
“The team is doing really good, everyone is playing really well,” Sun said. “We have a really strong lineup, it’s evenly balanced.”
Avery Li gave Greenwich an 8-2 win at third singles, while teammate Caitlin Mahoney won her match at No. 4 singles versus Westhill.

“My opponent was definitely hitting the ball hard back, so I worked on being patient and keeping the ball in play,” Mahoney said. “I definitely think its’ going to be more of a challenge the next match, but everyone on the team is up to it. We’re definitely looking to make it to the finals this year and take it home. As long as everyone is trying their best we’ll do good.”
In doubles action, seniors Malena Schraa and Emily Weinstein were 6-1, 6-0 winners against Westhill at No. 1.
“Me and Emily played really well, we all played well as a team,” said Schraa, a captain. “We are not thinking to the finals yet, we’re just going into our next one positive.”

“We’re taking it one day at a time, one match at a time,” Weinstein noted. “Our communication was really well on the court, our energy – we kept positive all the time.”
Yume Inagawa and Cameron Sowter won another match at second doubles for the Cards, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals.
“Our net game was really good,” Sowter said. “Me and Yume have a lot of chemistry on the court, so it’s really easy.”

“Her consistency in the back is really good,” Inagawa added. “Me poaching a lot and her having consistent shots is a good combination.”
Emme Pecorin and Bella Barban team up a No. 3 doubles for the Cardinals in the quarterfinals and promptly posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph.
