Greenwich baseball team tops Maloney in opening round of CIAC Class LL tourney

Greenwich High School’s baseball team earned a berth into the Round of 16 of the CIAC Class LL state Tournament.

The Cardinals did by recording a 5-2 win over Maloney in the first round of the Class LL Tournament on Tuesday at Havemeyer Park. The victory put 15th-seeded Greenwich in today’s 3:30 p.m. Class LL second round game against second-seeded Fairfield Warde.

In Monday’s Class LL opening-round matchup against unfamiliar foe Maloney, Greenwich scored three runs in the second inning and two runs in the third inning. Senior captain Troy Goodwin was the starting pitcher for the Cardinals. He pitched five innings to earn the win, striking out three batters, while not yielding a walk. Goodwin allowed only one earned run, while scattering six hits in the winning effort.

Senior captain Tommy Passamano pitched one scoreless inning of relief, as did senior captain John McHugh, who picked up the save for Greenwich. At the plate, McHugh had one hit and drew one walk, while outfielder Emmy Bulis had one hit, one RBI and two runs scored in the victory.

Infielder Aidan Brehm had a walk and one run scored, Passamano scored a run and Nick D’Andrea had one hit and a run scored for Greenwich. Luke Tocci, an infielder, also had one hit and one RBI, while Goodwin’s hit was a double for the victors. Goodwin also scored a run and walked.

The Greenwich-Warde winner plays the Enfield-Norwalk winner in the quarterfinals, which is scheduled to be held on June 1.
