Another win, another step closer to reaching the state final for the Greenwich High School girls tennis team.
The top-seeded Cardinals advanced to the semifinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Girls Tennis Tournament by recording a 5-2 win over ninth-seeded Wilton in Tuesday’s quarterfinal-round at Greenwich High School.
The Cardinals, who raised their record to 19-1, hosted seventh-seeded Fairfield Ludlowe in today’s Class LL semifinals and were also victorious to move on to Thursday’s championship match of the Class LL tourney. Against Wilton, Greenwich won three out of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles matchups.
In singles competition, senior captain Kyra Dybas was victorious for the Cardinals at the No. 1 spot, defeating Wilton’s Vivian Eckert, 7-5, 7-5, in a hard-fought match.
“She is a really good player with a very strong serve,” Dybas said of her Wilton opponent. “It was a very good match. Our team has been training for a long time very hard, so I think we’re all prepared for the semifinals and hopefully, the finals.”
Greenwich coach Gerard Sulli was especially impressed with Dybas’ consistency and poise against Eckert.
“I was very happy with the way she played,” Sulli said of Dybas. “She didn’t try to score a winner on each shot. She waited for the short balls to put them away and she didn’t panic when she fell behind early.”

“She was very consistent, her serve was on and she pulled out the win,” Sulli continued. “Let’s give kudos to Vivian, who also played extremely well. I was happy with how Kyra hung in there and battle to the end.”
At second singles, Greenwich received another sensational effort from sophomore Shining Sun, who posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wilton’s Mela Rutkowski. Caitlin Mahoney, also a sophomore, was a 6-2, 6-0 winner for the Cards at No. 3 singles against Sofia Rios. Wilton’s singles win came at the fourth spot, where Samantha Yan defeated junior Izzy Everett, 6-4, 6-2.
“They were consistent and wore their opponents out, which was nice to see,” Sulli said of the team’s singles players.
In doubles action, the Warriors’ Phoebe Sun and Abbey Byrnes dealt Greenwich seniors Malena Schraa and Emily Weinstein a rare loss. The Wilton duo edged Schraa/Weinstein, 6-4, 7-5.
“Wilton doubles lost only one match all season long, the fact that we got it close, 6-4, 7-5, was a credit to our doubles players,” Sulli noted.
At second doubles, junior Yume Inagawa and freshman Cameron Sowter of Greenwich won their match against Wilton, 6-2, 7-5.
“Cameron served the match out with three aces to win the game was a credit to her first serve,” Sulli said.
In the No. 3 doubles match, junior Emme Pecorin and sophomore Maddy Wilber earned another victory, winning their matchup, 6-1, 6-3 versus Wilton.
“Our third doubles had some nice, long rallies,” Sulli noted.
