Once again, excelling in singles and doubles play, the Greenwich High School girls tennis team earned a return trip to its final destination on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Cardinals advanced to the CIAC Class LL Tournament Girls advanced to the state tournament’s final, sweeping fifth-seeded Fairfield Ludlowe, 5-0, in Wednesday’s semifinals at Greenwich High School.

Greenwich, which made it to the state tournament’s championship match in 2023, where it was edged by New Canaan, plays 11th-seeded Staples in today’s 3:30 p.m. Class LL Tournament final.

“She’s a tough opponent, so I really had to focus,” Dybas said of her semifinal win against Ludlowe. “It was good, to be the winning match for the team.”

For the season, the Cardinals sport a sparkling 20-1 record.

“I think everyone is ready, everyone is excited and there is a lot of good energy,” Dybas said of the team playing in the finals. “So, I’m hopeful that we’re going to bring it home. “Our chemistry is probably the best this year that it has been, so that’s definitely a part of it.”

Greenwich’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Malena Schraa and Emily Weinstein are hoping to continue their standout season in today’s state final versus Staples. They didn’t finish their match against Ludlowe in the semifinals, as they held a 3-1 lead in the third set when GHS clinched the victory.

“Me and Emily didn’t get to finish, because we got four wins,” Schraa said. “We were in a third set, we were up 3-1, but we won the first set. We lost the second set, because we lost our energy a little, but we came back the third set and it was a little sad we couldn’t finish, but it’s okay.”

Indeed, the Cardinals have displayed significant improvement throughout the season.

“I’m so proud of this team, we’ve come so far and I’ve seen a lot of these girls grow a lot,” Schraa noted. “Not just as players, but as people. We have just grown a lot during this season and all the players are really close. The doubles teams have become really close and obviously singles, which is amazing.”

This marks Schraa’s first season playing doubles.

“Normally I did singles and that’s what I planned on doing this year, but I’ve loved doubles,” she said. “I’ve loved playing with my friend Emily. It’s fun having a partner and it’s fun to support someone and have someone support you. I’ve enjoyed it a lot this year.”

Emme Pecorin and Maddy Wilber are undefeated at third doubles for the Cardinals’ successful tennis team.

Junior Emme Pecorin and sophomore Maddy Wilber are undefeated as a doubles team for going on two seasons. They were unbeaten in 2023 and they have a perfect record going into today’s state finals. The duo was victorious against their Falcons foes in the semifinals.

“Maddy and I definitely played some of the tougher opponents that we did during the season,” Pecorin said of the semifinals. “But overall, it was good. Maddy and I, we’ve played together for two years, we’ve been undefeated both of those two years, so I think we work really well together and I really enjoy playing with her. To be able to make it to the finals my sophomore year and make it to the finals again this year is great.”
