Brunswick School’s George Kapp, who recently completed his sophomore year, became Brunswick’s first-ever national rowing champion by winning the Under-17 single event by open water at the USRowing Youth Nationals in Sarasota, Fla.

The Bruins brought two single scullers to the three-day 2024 USRowing Youth National Championships, held June 6-9. Kapp dominated the Time Trial on the first day of competition, cruised through the Semifinal on the second day and then led wire-to-wire for a convincing victory in the A Final, which took place on June 9 in Sarasota, Fla.

Kapp won the U-17 single event final by over seven seconds, covering the 2000-meter course at Nathan Benderson Park – the site of the 2017 World Championships – in a time of 7:31.43.

Christian Penny, representing Mohawk Homeschool Rowing Association, finished second in the U-17 single event, posting a time of 7:38.46. Kapp, who was given the Most Improved Award at the team’s Varsity Dinner this past week, closes out a tremendous sophomore campaign in which he won medals at major regattas in both sweep and sculling events.

Reed Eddy, who recently finished his junior season, is another strong sweep rower who also sculls for the Bruins. Eddy finished in fifth place in the B Final. Competing against 30 of the very best scullers in the country, Eddy had a solid Time Trial on Thursday, putting him through to the A/B Semifinals. In his Friday Semifinal, Eddy just missed out on the A Final by 1.02 seconds. Eddy’s performance in the B Final placed him at 13th in the country.
