Brunswick football team stymies Salisbury, improves record to 2-0 with road victory

Brunswick School’s football team traveled upstate to Salisbury School for some Friday night lights action and returned home with a decisive and with a 34-14 victory over the Northeast Prep league rival Crimson Knights.

Brunswick started its offense with two field goals off the foot of senior placekicker Oliver Reynolds, who converted 3 of 4 of his field goal attempts for the game. Later in the first quarter, Brunswick senior quarterback/captain Blake Hebert found sophomore wide receiver Noah Park open in the back of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown pass and Brunswick held a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Hebert added to the Bruins lead with two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter – one to open the quarter and one to close out the quarter. Hebert’s first rushing touchdown came on a 10-yard rush that saw Oliver Reynolds scoop and score a bad snap on the PAT to tack on the 2-point conversion.

Brunswick’s quarterback reached the end zone again on another run, this time from 7-yards out with 35 seconds to play in the second quarter. A successful point-after-attempt by Reynolds extended Brunswick’s lead to 28-0 after two quarters of action.

Hebert and Park connected again for an exciting 69-yard pass play in the third quarter, putting Bruins ahead, 34-0, heading into the fourth quarter. The Crimson Knights added two fourth quarter touchdowns, but the Bruins were able to hold off their NESPAC rival.

The Brunswick defense was stellar all night, once again, thanks to a trio of fumble recoveries. Brunswick allowed only a total of 106 yards in the winning effort.

Brunswick travels to Deerfield Academy for a 3 pm kickoff on Saturday, as it looks to raise its record to 3-0.

Hebert enjoyed another successful passing game for the Bruins, throwing for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Patrick Hiebert powered Brunswick’s ground game, gaining 182 yards.

Park totaled 142 yards receiving for the victors. Numerous athletes ignited Brunswick’s tenacious defensive effort against Salisbury.

Senior linebacker/captain Tyler Georgs recorded 12 tackles, two for a loss and registered one sack. Junior linebacker Jake Greene had seven tackles and recovered a fumble, while senior defensive back Ethan Long posted six tackles and forced a Salisbury fumble.

Senior defensive lineman EJ Perez  had 3 tackles, two for a loss and registered one sack.

“It was a great team win against a very good/physical Salisbury football team,” Brunswick coach Wayne McGillicuddy said. “Defensively , we played lights out again. We flew around and forced a few turnovers that put our offense in great position to score with short field again.”

“Offensively, we did some OK things but definitely have to clean up,” McGillicuddy noted. ” We took advantage of a few short fields. Blake is starting to feel more comfortable and get on the same page as our wide receivers and we relied on our offensive line and Patrick Hiebert.”
