
Greenwich Academy’s field hockey team couldn’t have asked for a better start to its season.
With the fall high school field hockey season just about at its midway point, the Gators sport a sparkling record of 7-0-1 heading into today’s 3:30 p.m. home game against NEPSAC opponent Kent School.
GA’s most recent win came on Oct. 1 against FAA foe St. Luke’s School in New Canaan. Senior forward Caroline Watts scored two goals, while freshman midfielder Elizabeth Winston, junior midfielder Mia Jones and freshman forward Winnie Newman added one goal apiece to propel the Gators.
Greenwich Academy coach Jamie Brower noted that Melanie Saunders, a junior defender, made a great goal line save, preserving the shutout in the winning effort.
On Sept. 30, Greenwich Academy traveled to Taft School in Watertown for a matchup against the 2023 defending NEPSAC Class A Tournament champions. GA proceeded to post a decisive 4-0 victory. Sophomore forward/midfielder Emily Rizzi tallied twice, while junior midfielder Georgia Schmitz and senior defender Isa Packard each had one goal for the Gators. Persia Shipman had another standout game in goal. The senior made seven saves in the shutout win.

The Gators’ September 28th home game against NESPAC rival Hotchkiss School saw them pull out a hard-fought 4-3 triumph in a contest that was decided in overtime. Junior forward Quinn Lahey scored the game-winning goal in overtime for GA, which received one goal apiece from freshman Penny Perkins, Schmitz and freshman Cordelia Blanc.
On September 25th, Greenwich Academy was victorious versus FAA opponent Hopkins School in New Haven, 6-0. Blanc recorded two goals, while senior forward/midfielder Lavinia Cartellieri, Lahey senior forward/midfielder Lindsay Gaynor and freshman forward/midfielder Vianna Gabelli each added one goal for the victors. At the Max Field Hockey Invitational Tournament in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, which took place Sept. 20-21, played Shawnee High School from New Jersey to a 4-4 tie. Perkins registered two goals for the Gators, who got one goal each from Cartellieri and Rizzi.
GA edged Gyneed Mercy Academy, 4-3, behind two tallies from Cartellieri. One of Cartellieri’s goals came on a penalty stroke. Senior midfielder/defender Lila Cabot and Lahey also scored to ignite the winning effort.
After hosting Kent today, GA is in action again on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against visiting Rye Country Day School.
