Sacred Heart Greenwich’s field hockey team hosted two games this week against NEPSAC boarding schools and went 1-1, defeating Loomis Chaffee School, then losing to Hotchkiss School at Magnetti Field.

For the season, the Tigers have a record of 8-2. Their loss to Hotchkiss School ended the Tigers’ five-game winning streak. Against Loomis Chaffee on Oct. 9, host Sacred Heart was victorious, 2-0. Xan Collins gave SHG a 1-0 lead, scoring with 8:06 remaining in the first quarter.

Ainsley Clough assisted on Collins’ goal, which put the Tigers ahead, 1-0 after the first quarter. Following a scoreless second quarter, the hosts increased their advantage in the third quarter. Kingsley Ely’s goal at the 9:57 mark of the third quarter gave Sacred Heart a 2-0 edge and concluded the game’s scoring.

Goalie Teresa Harkins made seven saves in the winning effort.

“We are very pleased with today’s outcome, it was a well-fought game,” SHG coach Alex Gheorghe said. “Loomis came with a strong record behind them with some great results. We are very proud and happy for our team.”

Against Hotchkiss on Oct. 11, the Tigers dropped a tough 2-0 decision. The Bearcats scored one goal in the first quarter and tallied once in the fourth quarter. Eleanor Helm’s goal with 3:02 left to play in the first quarter made it 1-0. Harper Semiles scored with 10:51 to go in the fourth period put the visitors ahead, 2-0.

Harkins made four saves in the win.

“Today we played Hotchkiss, a very solid team, very well and very fast in transition,” Gheorghe noted. “We had our chances, but we didn’t capitalize on them. We learned a good lesson and we now need to prepare for our next match.”

Sacred Heart Greenwich’s next game is Tuesday against visiting Greenwich Academy at Magnetti Field in a rivalry game. The Tigers and Gators went 1-1 against each other in 2023, with Sacred Heart Greenwich winning the regular season game to clinch the FAA regular season championship and Greenwich Academy emerging victorious in the FAA Tournament final to capture the league title. Tuesday’s big game between the Tigers and Gators is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
