The regular season is over for the Greenwich High School field hockey team, which excelled this fall from start to finish on its way to registering a sparkling record of 11-3.
Now the exciting postseason is about to begin.
Receiving the No. 4 seed in the FCIAC Field Hockey Tournament, the Cardinals will host fifth-seeded rival Wilton in today’s (Oct. 24) quarterfinal-round at Cardinal Stadium. The familiar foes have faced each other numerous times in the past, their most recent meeting coming on Sept. 20 when Greenwich posted a 2-1 home win.
A pair of victories to close out the regular season solidified Greenwich’s No. 4 seed and a home game in the FCIAC quarterfinals. On Tuesday, the Cardinals rolled to an 8-0 road win against Stamford. Clara Ojea Quintana recorded a hat trick to power the Cardinals past the Black Knights.
Her goal off a pass from senior captain Kate Donnellan with 8:20 remaining in the first quarter gave GHS a 1-0 lead on Stamford. Ojea Quintana added a goal off an assist from senior captain Stella Thibeault with 2:14 left in the opening quarter, putting the Cards on top, 2-0.

Donnellan tallied at the 11:21 mark of the second quarter, then set up Ojea Quintana for her third goal of the game with 9:31 still left in the second stanza, making it 4-0. Carlota Lopez converted a shot off an assist from senior Lexi Carino with 5:08 left to play in the second quarter, then Stella Thibeault capped the first-half scoring, notching a goal at the 2:44 mark.
Delfina Rotella tallied twice in the second half, getting goals off assists from Ava Caminiti and Ava Cocozza. Tatum Wunderlich got the shutout win in goal for the Cardinals.
“It was a fast and aggressive game that required us to move the ball quickly,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “We did a great job of playing efficiently and filling lanes.”

It was a successful Senior Day for Greenwich on Oct. 19 when it played host to non-conference opponent Cheshire, a formidable foe. The Cardinals were victorious on their special Senior Day, 4-0. Ojea Quintana’s unassisted goal 3:13 into the first quarter put GHS ahead, 1-0. Senior captain Sofia Klingbeil scored off a penalty stroke with 27.9 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, giving Greenwich a 2-0 advantage. Donnellan increased the lead to 3-0 with a tally at the 9:55 mark of the second quarter.
In the fourth quarter came Greenwich’s fourth goal, with Ojea Quintana finishing off a play. Wunderlich was in goal in the winning effort, making three saves. For the game, Greenwich registered nine shots on goal and drew nine penalty corners.
“It was a tough battle that we were happy to win,” Wax said. “We loved being able to celebrate our wonderful seniors and their successes on and off the field.”

Greenwich has shutout nine of its opponents so far this season, heading into today’s 4 p.m. FCIAC quarterfinal versus Wilton and has won 10 of its last 11 games. Their lone loss during their success streak came against Staple, which is undefeated and seeded No. 1 in the tournament.
The Cardinals played well in a 2-0 home loss against the Wreckers on Oct. 16 under the lights. Sofia Fidalgo and Storey Ahl had the goals for Staples.
“I thought it was a fantastic game,” Wax said of the team’s game against Staples. “Going into the game we knew it was going to be tough competition. They are one of the best in the country, so we prepared hard and I thought the girls came out and executed a lot of our game plan and what we were able to do. That worked well 95 percent of the game.”
“We were off by just a little bit on some of our corners – a matter of inches,” Wax added. “I’m glad we got them and I’m glad that we were able to put a lot of pressure on them. A lot of positives to take away. I think if we play them again they will be prepared for just as hard as a game. I’m excited, we work all season long for the hard games. Going into postseason we are really excited and extremely hungry.”
