How is this for a dominant season?
The Greenwich High School girls volleyball team recently concluded a regular season in which they registered a record of 19-1, winning 17 matches by a score of 3-0. That’s right, of the Cardinals’ 19 victories, they have swept 17 of their opponents.
Greenwich finished with a record of 15-0 in the FCIAC, earning the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, while also winning the FCIAC West Division championship. With an ultra successful season in the books, the Cardinals now have their sights set on excelling in the postseason.
The FCIAC Volleyball Tournament begins tomorrow (October 25) and No. 1-seeded Greenwich hosts eighth-seeded Westhill High School in the quarterfinal-round at 4:30 p.m.
“It’s been great, they love the game, they have a goal, they want to go far and they work hard every day for it,” Greenwich coach Marianna Linnehan said of her squad’s season.

On Oct. 21, Greenwich had its final home match of the regular season and celebrated its Senior Night in style, sweeping Fairfield Warde, 3-0. The Cardinals won the match by set scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-16.
Senior captain/setter Sarah Bernann recorded seven digs, 28 assists, two aces and one kill to help pace Greenwich’s offense in its matchup against FCIAC foe Fairfield Warde.
Joy Houdre, a senior captain/libero, registered 12 digs, five assists and four aces for the Cardinals, who held the momentum throughout most of their match against the Mustangs.

Sophomore Kayah Armstrong tallied seven digs, four kills and one block, while senior captain Alina Sarkissian totaled six kills, 2 blocks and one dig in GHS’ winning effort.
“I knew that my seniors were going to be kind of sad that this was their last home game of the regular season,” Linnehan said. “But I knew they were going to play well.”
Heidi Zieme, a sophomore, notched nine digs, seven kills and two blocks, while senior Talia Muir, had 12 digs, eight kills, two blocks and one ace for Greenwich (19-1, 15-0 FCIAC).

In the first set against Warde, Greenwich held a 7-4 lead. A kill by Zieme made it 8-4. Later in the match, strong serving by Zieme helped the Cards extend their advantage to 13-7. Junior Jocelyn Jefferson’s block capped the opening set, which Greenwich took, 25-17.
The Cardinals ended their regular season to remember by topping Brien McMahon in Norwalk, 3-0 (25-10), 25-20, 25-14). Bernaan notched 34 assists, five digs, one kill and one block and Houdre tallied 12 digs, five assists and four aces.

Armstrong added nine kills, two digs and one block and Sarkissian provided eight kills, two digs and one block for the Cardinals versus the Senators. Zieme (13 kills, six digs, two aces, one assist) and Muir (12 digs, five kills, two assists, one ace) also powered the Cardinals.
Bernann, Cameron Clark, Houdre, Muir and Sarkissian are the Cardinals’ seniors.

Linnehan spoke of the significance of the seniors’ presence on the team.
“They lead this entire team,” she said of the senior members of the team. “Their focus, their leadership, even their presence on the court – their skill, all the younger players see that and they look up to them.”
