Another game, another shutout win for the Greenwich High School football team.
The Cardinals celebrated their Senior Day in style on Nov. 16, cruising past Westhill, 42-0, at crowded Cardinal Stadium.
With the decisive victory, Greenwich improved its record to 8-1 heading into its Thanksgiving Day game against FCIAC rival Staples on Nov. 28.
“The most exciting part of the day was all of the senior contributions,” Greenwich coach Anthony Morello said. “We had a senior kickoff team this week. It consisted of several senior athletes who contribute regularly at practice each week, but hasn’t translated to much game time yet.”

Senior running back Hector Lopez rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries to help power the Cardinals’ offense against Westhill.
“Hector eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the fourth time and scored his 11th and 12th rushing TD,” Morello noted. “He is 58 yards from 1,000.”
M.J. D’Angelo, a senior quarterback, passed for 87 yards and one touchdown. His longest completion of the game was a 51-yard pass play to senior wide receiver Blake Martin.

D’Angelo added 35 rushing yards in the win. The Cardinals led the Vikings, 7-0, after the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime, before added a pair of second-half touchdowns. Martin had 56 receiving yards, including a touchdown reception. Quarterback Nick Wells totaled 25 passing yards and completed seven passes for the Cards on their Senior Day.
“Seniors M.J. and Wells completed passes to six different wide receivers, that’s special,” Morello said.

Junior linebacker Jack Kelly blocked a Westhill punt that was recovered for a touchdown by sophomore Andy Stedem. The shutout was the second in a row for GHS, which defeated Ridgefield on the road, 38-0, on Nov. 8. The Cardinals visit Staples on Thanksgiving and the game is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Currently, Greenwich is ranked No. 1 in Class LL with an 8-1 record. Staples also had an 8-1 record and is ranked No. 3, while Fairfield Prep (8-1) is ranked No. 2. West Haven (8-1), which Greenwich defeated in the season-opener, is ranked fourth.
