Whether it’s at Cardinal Stadium or on the road, the Greenwich High School varsity cheerleading team is always there to support the Greenwich varsity football team at its games and the Nov. 16th game between the Cardinals and Westhill was extra special for the cheerleaders and football players.

Like the football team, the varsity cheerleading team celebrated Senior Day, making the game especially significant to the four senior cheerleaders. Greenwich’s senior cheerleaders are, in alphabetical order, Laura Colombo, Sierra Erensen, Siera Rollins and Jane Trager.

Greenwich varsity cheerleading coach Julia Vyskocil discussed the impact the seniors have on the squad.

“This year’s senior class is truly special,” Vyskocil said. “They are extremely dedicated, extremely passionate, and have been incredible leaders for this team. They hold all of their teammates accountable. They are so willing to work individually with each athlete to help them progress in their skills and help ensure that they are having a fun, productive experience.”

Vyskocil noted how inspirational the seniors are to the teammates and the motivation she sees them provide during each practice.

“These seniors are determined to take this team to the next level competitively and I am truly so proud of how they lead this team,” she said. “I know they are going to continue to leave an extremely impactful, positive legacy on this team and program.”

“They push me to be the best coach I can be for this team and they push themselves and their teammates to see their true potential,” added Vyskocil, also a mathematics teacher at Greenwich High School. “I am so excited for what they will accomplish this competition season, and I am so proud to have these seniors continue the incredible traditions that this program has. They continue to impress me every day with their motivation, leadership and drive! They have their goals set on greatness and are focused on leading the team to reach all of these goals.”

During the fall season, Greenwich’s cheerleaders cheer at football games – the varsity cheerleaders are present at the varsity football team’s home and away games.

The winter season is, indeed, very busy for Greenwich’s cheerleaders, as they choreograph and practice their routines for the intense competition season, which includes the FCIAC and state championships. They will also cheer at the school’s basketball games.

Erensen, Rollins and Trager are the captains of the GHS varsity cheer team, which held its 17th annual Fashion Show on Nov. 11 at the Greenwich High School Performing Arts Center. The event raised money for the Greenwich High School cheerleading program. All of the cheerleaders on the team helped run the Fashion Show and the seniors on the squad – Colombo, Erensen, Rollins and Trager – each modeled fashions from stores nearby.

“The Fashion Show was incredibly successful this year,” Vyskocil said. “We were so thankful to everyone that came out, supported us, watched the Fashion Show, and helped by donating items or buying raffle and silent auction items. This fundraiser helps us immensely in paying for resources for competition season that will help us to continue to be a competitive program. We brought the event back to the Performing Arts Center at GHS, which was really special for the seniors.”

“Although it is our biggest fundraiser of the year, more importantly, it allows us to honor our incredible seniors and the love, time, and dedication that they have put into this program. It was such a great night for them. The GHS Senior Football players came to escort our seniors down the runway, which we always appreciate so much. The seniors modeled clothes from Mixology in Rye Brook and Kate Fong in Greenwich. It was an amazing night and a huge success. We are so excited to continue to cheer the football team on to success and then ramp up for our own competition season.”
