The Greenwich High School girls swimming/diving team accomplished plenty during its ultra-successful 2024 season under the guidance of head coach Brendan Heller, who received a special award by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association recently.
Heller was named the CHSCA Girls Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year for 2024. He was presented with the award Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-State Dinner on Dec. 3 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, Connecticut.
Greenwich High’s girls swimming/diving team won the team title at the 2024 CIAC Class LL Championships, totaling an impressive team score of 1,012 points, a record total of points at the state championship meet. The Cardinals also finished a strong second at the CIAC State Open Championships held at Yale University, earning a team score of 551 points, just 36 points behind State Open champion Ridgefield.

Greenwich also turned in a second-place finish behind Ridgefield in the team standings at the FCIAC Championships with 419 points. The Cardinals captured the FCIAC West Division title after producing a successful regular season.
Heller received the CHSCA Girls Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year for the 2024 season with 15 members of the Cardinals’ squad in attendance, all of whom received their All-State swimming awards at the dinner.
“It was extremely gratifying to be chosen by the CHSCA as this year’s Girls Swimming Coach of the Year,” Heller said. “I’ve been extremely lucky the last four years to have an amazing experience with some incredibly talented student-athletes that have made it such a blast for me as the coach. When everyone’s focus every day is on the success of the team, it makes it incredibly rewarding.”

“I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to represent the GHS Swimming, the town of Greenwich and the local swimming community, with such a great group of kids on our team,” Heller continued. “It feels very humbling to join a list of Coaches of the Years who are legends in the sport that I’ve grown up looking up to (Dick Hawkes, Marj Trifone, Lorrie Hoyakeman, Ed Ashton, etc). I’ve been saying this for years, but the reality of it is so true — there’s no dream too big.”
