Greenwich High’s girls basketball team edges St. Joseph in OT to stay undefeated

The streak is seven and counting.

Greenwich High School’s girls basketball team raised its record to a perfect 7-0 by earning an exciting 50-45 overtime win over host St. Joseph High School in Trumbull on Jan. 7.

Freshman center Zuri Faison scored a game-high 25 points to help power the Cardinals to their victory over the Cadets.

Faison scored 17 points during the second and third quarter as well as the overtime quarter for the Cardinals. Junior guard Madi Utzinger scored 14 points, including two 3-pointers to also spark the Cardinals’ offense.

Elsa Xhekaj, a freshman guard, added seven points for Greenwich, which outscored St. Joseph, 7-2 in overtime.

“It was a tough battle all game long, but I’m so proud of the resilience my girls showed,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said.

Senior guard Alyssa Gath and junior guard Juliette Pelham had two points apiece for the Cardinals, who led the Cadets, 8-7, after the first quarter, then trailed, 20-17, at halftime. The score was tied at 43-43 following four quarters of action.

Greenwich hosts Wilton tonight (Jan. 10) at 7 p.m., then plays host to Bridgeport Central on Tuesday (Jan. 14) at 7 p.m.
