The goals came early and often for the Greenwich High School boys hockey team during the second period of its game against Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe co-op and they came from numerous athletes.
Following a productive first period in which they scored two goals, the Cardinals scored five times in the second period, including a four-goal run during a 2 minute, five second span in the second period – a significant stretch that put this FCIAC matchup, held on Jan. 27 at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink out of reach.
Receiving goals from eight different players, Greenwich rolled to a resounding 9-0 win over visiting Fairfield co-op. The victory was the fifth of the season for the Cardinals, who have a record of 5-7-1 overall and 2-4 in the FCIAC.
“It was good to get a win after a four-game losing streak,” Greenwich coach Jack Duffy said. “They did a lot of stuff we asked them to start doing and we had a good, consistent effort as well. We did the things that we needed to do to win.”

Possessing the puck in Fairfield co-op’s zone the majority of the time, while displaying excellent puck movement, Greenwich held a 2-0 lead after the first period and held a 7-0 advantage following the second period.
“It was a full team effort, we were getting pucks deep,” Greenwich sophomore John Meehan said. “We did well in the defensive zone, we stuck to the system and had a lot of energy.”
The Cardinals, who put the brakes on a four-game losing skid with the convincing win, scored their first goal of this conference matchup with 5:17 remaining in the first period. Senior forward/captain George Holdsworth controlled a pass from junior Alex Zhukovsky near the right post and knocked the puck past Fairfield’s goalie, giving Greenwich a 1-0 edge. Junior Teddy Johnson also assisted on the goal.

Just 24 seconds later, senior forward/captain Joe Lewis gave GHS a 2-0 lead, scoring off a rush up the ice with 4:53 to go in the opening period. Junior Hayden Odefelt and junior defenseman Boden Farmer each assisted on Lewis’ goal.
The Cardinals’ scoring spurt began with 10:21 left in the second period. Sophomore forward Brent Brower scored off a tip in off a shot from Farmer from just below the blue line, making it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals. Only nine seconds later with 10:12 to go in the second frame, Greenwich scored again following the ensuing faceoff.
Senior Mikey Gilbride scored off assists from Meehan and Odefelt, putting GHS on top, 4-0.
“We had a shoot first mentality today, it obviously paid off,” Meehan said.

Still in the second period, the Cardinals went on another scoring surge. Junior William Flatow’s goal off assists from Farmer and Holdsworth put Fairfield in a 5-0 hole at the 8:36 mark of the second stanza. Then only 10 seconds later after winning the ensuing faceoff, senior Sam Whiteley tallied with the assist going to senior Teddy Erensen, making it 6-0.
Meehan’s goal came with 3:16 left to play in the second period off an assist from Lewis.
“Our goal is to win every period, so to come out with a good first period was nice to see,” coach Duffy said. “Our players were just thinking about having a shooting mentality and to get traffic in front of the goaltender.”

Whiteley’s second tally occurred just 15 seconds into the third period, with the assist going to Meehan. Sophomore John Oliver capped Greenwich’s big scoring game with a goal at the 12:23 mark of the final period.
For the game, GHS outshoot Fairfield co-op by a wide margin, 41-9. The Cards held a 17-3 shots-on-goal advantage in the first period and outshot the visitors, 11-2, in the second period. Greenwich took 13 shots on goal in the final period.

Senior goalie Luka Priatka and junior Jason Rosenthal combined on the shutout win for Greenwich. Priatka has been stellar in goal all season for GHS.
“A win was what this team needed, it allowed us to get our skates underneath us,” Priatka said. “On defense, everyone did a good job. We are down two defensemen, but I think it was still pretty strong.”

Following their victory against Fairfield co-op, Greenwich was defeated by Notre Dame Prep on Jan. 28. The Cardinals will look to get right back on the winning track when it visits Ridgefield on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. at Winter Garden Ice Rink.
