Greenwich High girls basketball team storms past Stamford, improves to 15-0

Whether its playing in front of its home crowd at Greenwich High School or on the road, Greenwich’s girls basketball team has produced the same results this season.

The Cardinals continued their season of perfection, cruising to an impressive 46-22 win over host Stamford High School. With the decisive victory, the Cardinals upped their record to 15-0 overall and 10-0 in the FCIAC.

Greenwich is in first place in the FCIAC, one game ahead of both Ridgefield (9-1) and Fairfield Warde (9-1). Coach Megan Wax’s Cardinals host Ridgefield tomorrow (Feb. 7) at 7 p.m. They are scheduled to visit Fairfield Warde on Feb. 17.

In Greenwich’s road win against Stamford, junior guard Madi Utzinger scored a game-high 18 points. Freshman center Zuri Faison added 15 points, while senior guard/captain Alyssa Gath made a pair of 3-pointers for six points.

Greenwich held a 13-9 lead on Stamford after the first quarter of action and was ahead of the Black Knights, 24-15 at halftime. Playing their trademark tenacious defense, the Cardinals limited the Black Knights to eight second half points. Stamford scored five points in the third quarter and three points in the fourth.

Senior forward/captain Kate Baxendale scored five points and junior guard Juliette Pelham had two points for the Cardinals. Greenwich brought a 31-19 lead on Stamford into the fourth quarter, then outscored the hosts, 15-3, in the fourth quarter.

Kaitlyn Fox, a senior, had eight points and teammate Nia Freeman, a junior scored seven for Stamford (12-3). Greenwich’s game against Ridgefield tomorrow (Feb. 7) is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Cardinals have held opponents to under 30 points in nine games so far this season. Greenwich is ranked first in the CIAC Class LL rankings. The Cardinals entered the game ranked No. 4 in the GameTimeCT Top 10 Poll.
