It was a sensational Senior Night for Greenwich High School’s boys hockey team when it hosted FCIAC foe Trumbull High School at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink on Feb. 5.
Scoring two goals in each period, the Cardinals skated to a decisive 6-2 Senior Night victory over the Eagles. With the conclusion of the regular season rapidly approaching, the Cardinals know they must round into top form for the upcoming postseason.

The home win against Trumbull on Feb. 5 was a step in the right direction for Greenwich, which put the breaks on a two-game losing skid. Overall, Greenwich has a record of 6-8-1. The Cardinals’ FCIAC mark is 2-5.
Coached by Jack Duffy, Greenwich was scheduled to visit FCIAC rival Darien High School tonight (Feb. 8) but the game was postponed due to inclement weather that’s blanketed the area.
In their triumph against Trumbull, the Cardinals were tied with the Eagles, 2-2, after the first period, then led the visitors, 4-2 following the second period. The Eagles scored the game’s first two goals to seize a quick 2-0 lead.

Sophomore right wing Stephen Miklos gave Trumbull a 1-0 edge, scoring off an assist from senior defenseman Cailen Simon with 11:40 remaining in the first period. At the 6:59 mark of the opening period, Alex Gratos made it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles, tallying off assists from Tyler Landin and Drew Kantman.
That’s all that got past Greenwich senior goalie Luke Priatka on this night, however, as it was all Cardinals thereafter. Junior Alex Zhukovsky put the Cardinals on the scoreboard with 5:18 left to play in the first period.
Zhukovsky scored on a one-timer off a pass from senior Teddy Erensen, bringing GHS to within 2-1.

The equalizer for the Cards came with 1:52 to go in the first period. Controlling the puck off a pass from senior defenseman Brady Lisjak, fellow senior defenseman Michael Lombardi snapped a shot home from the left faceoff circle, evening the score at 2-2 for Greenwich.
The second period belonged to the Cardinals, who took the lead for good at 3-2 3:10 into the second period. After Greenwich won a faceoff in Trumbull’s zone, junior Trent O’Neil gathered the puck and skated between the circles and sent the puck past Trumbull senior Daniel Dedvukaj, giving GHS a one-goal lead.

The Cards gained a two-goal lead at 4-2 when junior Zhukovsky scored from the left wing after getting the puck from senior tri-captain/forward George Holdsworth with 57 seconds remaining in the second period.
Greenwich added two third-period goals and received standout goaltending from Priatka to close out its Senior Night triumph.

Greenwich’s seniors include: Mikey Gilbride, Sam Whiteley, Heath Jervis, Michael Lombardi, Brady Lisjak, George Holdsworth, Owen Milazzo, Theo Fales, Brett Sylvester, Teddy Erensen, Crosby Newi, Joe Lewis and Luke Priatka.
The Cardinals are currently the sixth ranked team in Division I of the CIAC. Greenwich hosts St. Joseph Monday (Feb. 10) at 4 p.m.
