With four games remaining in the regular season, Greenwich High School’s boys basketball team is in prime position to qualify for the FCIAC and CIAC Division II tournaments, where it of course, hopes to make its presence felt.

The Cardinals have won seven out of their last 10 games following a slow start to their season, have an overall record of 8-8 and an FCIAC mark of 7-5. Heading into their game against FCIAC foe Westhill High School, the Cardinals are in sixth place in the FCIAC.

Eight teams qualify for the FCIAC Tournament and Greenwich still has three conference games left in its regular season, starting with its matchup against Westhill on Friday (Feb. 14). Greenwich’s latest win was a 61-44 victory at Norwalk on Feb. 10.

On Feb. 7, the Cards nearly dealt Ridgefield its first FCIAC loss of the season, with the Tigers holding on for a 52-51 final-second home win.

Stamford, which has a record of 6-6 in the FCIAC and is tied for seventh place in the conference, was paced by 13 points from guard Lassan Johnson. The Black Knights received 12 points from Jhamari Atkinson and jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead on the Cardinals after guard Ryan Connors (seven points) swished a 3-pointer with 4:24 remaining in the first quarter.

“We took their first punch in the first quarter and we gathered ourselves, we ran our offense – it was good execution,” Maloney said following Greenwich’s win against Stamford. “We got off to a good start.”

Trailing 16-15 after the first quarter, Stamford scored the first five points of the second quarter to go ahead, 20-16, on a 3-pointer by Conners.

Martin’s shot from beyond the 3-point arc brought Greenwich to within 20-19. After Maloney knotted the score at 20-20 with a foul shot, Martin scored on a strong move to the basket, giving GHS a 22-20 edge.

“Oliver Suppo, an amazing captain, he’s been an amazing captain, since we were named coaches and everyone was so happy to have him back tonight, it was his first game back,” Greenwich head coach Bill Brehm said after the Stamford game. “I know all the kids wanted to play really well for him coming back.”

Seventeen of Maloney’s game-best 24 points came in the first half. He nailed three 3-pointers on his way to his 24-point effort.

“This was a big one for the playoff run,” Maloney said. “It was a huge win for us.”
