Improving on its win total from one season ago was one of the Greenwich High School girls hockey team’s goals this winter and head coach Doug Jebb’s squad certainly accomplished such a goal.

The Cardinals followed the three-win season they posted last winter by winning nine games this season, defeating competitive opponents along the way. Greenwich, which narrowly missed qualifying for the state hockey tournament, finished its 2024-2025 season with a solid record of 9-11.

Greenwich capped its season by skating against Simsbury at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink on Feb. 17. Senior Day was celebrated by the Cardinals, who paid tribute to their four seniors prior to the game and after the game with special Senior Day ceremonies.

The Cardinals hosted Simsbury.

Scoring four first-period goals visiting Simsbury earned a hard-fought 5-3 win over Greenwich, which trailed 4-1 after the first period. The Cardinals received one goal apiece from freshman forward Lexi Lisjak, freshman forward Miren Woolven and senior forward/captain Aubrey Roth.

“We battled hard, we just didn’t have the jump in our step,” Jebb said. “We had a week-and-a-half off, this was a rescheduled game from the 8th. If we had played them on the 8th, I think we would have had a very different jump in our legs. It took us a period to find our legs.”

“They’ve got some very strong forwards,” Jebb continued. “I’m very proud of our girls. What we talked about all season is get better each week and we’ve gotten better each week.”

Defender/captain Lexi Carino, Roth, forward Stella Buddy and forward Taylor Carrescia were the four seniors the Cardinals honored on their Senior Day.

“The seniors – great leadership by Lexi Carino, Aubrey Roth, Taylor Carrescia and Stella Buddy,” Jebb noted. “Stella, Aubrey and Lexi are four-year seniors and Taylor for three – so, we’ll miss their leadership. They are great seniors – a great senior class.”

Roth has helped power the Cardinals’ offense throughout her varsity career, scoring a wealth of goals, while also setting up scoring opportunities.

“It was amazing, I love everyone on the team, it was a great experience,” Roth said.

Carino was a mainstay on defense over the course of her impressive Cardinals career, while Buddy and Carrescia helped spark the squad’s offensively.

“My four years was really fun,” Buddy said. “Overall, it was a good four years. It was a really good program and I hope that other girls continue to play.”

“Coming in as a sophomore, I found that the hockey program really embraces new players and that’s a trend we’ve seen the last three years,” Carrescia said. “A lot of new skaters have tried out for the program.”

Lisjak got GHS off to a good start against Simsbury. She scored off assists from sophomore forward Mady Jones and freshman defender Hailey Dreher with 13:37 remaining in the first period, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

After Greenwich freshman goalie Eleanor Woolven made a pair of saves early in the opening period, Simsbury tied the score at 1-1. Freshman Kamryn Moors went top shelf with a shot from the left faceoff dot, making it 1-1 at the 11:06 mark of the first period.

Junior Gillian Philbrick and sophomore Rose Calabro each assisted on Simsbury’s equalizing goal. With 7:41 to go in the first period, Simsbury took the lead for good on a goal by sophomore Jane Curtiss off an assist from sophomore Alexandra Berger.

The go-ahead goal came off a faceoff in the Cardinals’ zone, as Curtiss snapped a shot home from between the circles. Calabro knocked in a rebound with 3:15 to go in the opening period and Curtiss added her second goal of the game with 2:21 still left in the first period, making it 4-1 in favor of the visitors.

Trailing 4-1, Greenwich played a strong second period. After falling behind, 5-1, on a goal by Simsbury’s Grace Jacobs 36 seconds into the second period, Miren Woolven tallied at the 12:43 mark.

The host Cardinals went on a power play late in the second period, with Roth, Miren Woolven and Dreher threatening to score with challenging shots on goal. Trailing 5-2, the Cardinals closed to within 5-3 when Roth tallied 59 seconds into the third period.

“We had a goal of improving our effort and I think we got a lot better from the start,” Roth said of the Cardinals’ overall performance this season. “All the times we won it was a team effort and we had fun.”

Greenwich’s victories this season came against Wilton, Ridgefield, Woodstock Academy, Guilford, Sacred Heart Greenwich and Trumbull. The Cardinals beat Ridgefield, Wilton and Woodstock Academy twice.

“We really got it under control and everyone on the line was really good friends, so it was easy to pass and communicate,” Buddy said of the Cards’ significant improvement. “This year, everyone was willing to listen and I think that helped a lot.”

Said Carrescia: “It’s really inspiring to see that this program is building so much. I do think that we’re consistently growing and getting better. We have really strong underclassmen and it shows exponentially.”

A look at Greenwich’s roster shows that it will return a lot of athletes next season, so look for the Cardinals to make their mark in the FCIAC and state.

“We have 14 sophomores and freshmen returning, so we have a great future,” Jebb said. “We are rebuilding the team and program and we have a lot of interest in the school and it’s all a credit to the kids.”
