The regular season couldn’t have concluded better for the Greenwich High School boys alpine skiing team.
The Cardinals ended their regular season and celebrated their Senior Day in style, finishing first in the team standings at the final Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League regular season meet. Receiving numerous standout performances on the slopes at Mount Southington, Greenwich finished first in the meet held on Feb. 5, with a team time of 269.91 seconds.
Staples placed second in the team standings with a team time of 273.31 seconds, while Fairfield was third (274.14) and Fairfield Prep finished fourth (274.82). The CISL race included 14 teams.

With the victory, their first of the season, the Cardinals qualified for the CISL State Open Championships, which is scheduled to take place on Feb. 26 at Mount Southington with a starting time of 4 p.m.
“The boys have been working hard all season to make up for poor performance early on,” Greenwich senior captain Owen Benison said. “Every member of the team has risen to the challenge and fought tooth and nail to bring home this season’s first race win.”
Steven Hartofilis paced Greenwich’s victory by finishing fifth overall in the meet. Hartofilis finished his first run with a time of 22.47 seconds and his second run in 20.44 for an overall time of 42.91 seconds.

Benison placed ninth overall registering a time of 43.84 seconds (22.83 first run, 21.01 second run). William Monaco was 17th (44.91, 23.24, 21.67) and Greenwich teammate Nicolas Sosa had an 18th-place finish (23.39, 21.59, 44.98).
Thaddeus Whittle, a senior captain, finished 21st (23.30, 22.04, 45.34) for the Cardinals.
“The boys worked hard this week and despite missing an important player due to sickness/injury, we still came out on top,” Whittle said following the team’s victorious meet. “It was a good way to round this season off.”

James Mathieson recorded a time of 47.93 (25.18, 22.75) and Henrik Sides clocked in at 51.97. The race featured more than 180 skiers.
The Cardinals now turn their attention to the CISL State Open Championships.

“I told them all they should be proud,” Benison said, referring to the Cards’ victory in the final regular season meet. “They came out on top as a result of nothing but their own hard work.”
