The week began with a one-sided win for the Greenwich High School boys hockey team, but unfortunately for the Cardinals, they were soon on the receiving end of a convincing loss.
One day after cruising past Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe, 11-1, the Cardinals were defeated by non-conference rival Fairfield Prep, 8-2, at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink on Feb. 18. The Jesuits (6-11-1) scored on the game’s first shift, registered three goals in the first period and added three more goals in the second period en route to recording their six-goal win.
Greenwich has an overall record of 8-10-1 with one regular season game remaining. The Cardinals will travel to Wesleyan University on Feb. 23 for a 7 p.m. matchup. Greenwich will then compete in the FCIAC Hockey Tournament.

The Cardinals are seeded fourth in the FCIAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded St. Joseph in the opening round on Feb. 25 at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink with a starting time of 4:30 p.m. The playoff game will mark the third time the Cardinals and Cadets will meet this season. GHS is 2-0 versus St. Joseph so far this season.
“We beat them in overtime a week or so ago and we beat them 2-1 at their place early in the year,” Greenwich coach Jack Duffy said of St. Joseph. “They are a physical team and we have to be ready to play.”
In Greenwich’s game against Fairfield Prep on Feb. 18, junior forward Ryan Hicks and Connor Driscoll, also a junior forward, scored two goals apiece to power the Jesuits.

Senior defenseman Christopher Sola had one goal and one assist for Fairfield Prep, which led Greenwich 3-1 after the first period and 6-1 after two periods of play.
“Fairfield Prep is always a good program,” Duffy said. “They are well-coached, they came here today with a mission and they got it done.”
Sophomore forward Matthew Tulvin opened the game’s scoring, tallying on the Jesuits’ first shift off an assist from junior linemate Ryan Hicks 34 seconds into the first period.

Junior forward Henry Schwartz and senior defenseman Gavin Burke each added first-period goals for Prep. The Cardinals closed to within 3-1 on an unassisted goal by junior Trent O’Neil with 2:04 to go in the first period.
Fairfield Prep soon separated from there, scoring three unanswered goals to start the second period, seizing a 6-1 advantage.
Hicks put the puck home on the opening shift of the second period, scoring off an assist from junior forward Luca Bosco 33 seconds into the frame. O’Neil also had Greenwich’s second goal, tallying off assists from junior defenseman Boden Farmer and senior forward George Holdsworth with 6:04 left in the second period.

“I don’t think we competed the best that we could, but that’s a very good team,” Duffy said. “They played a heck of a game and we have to do better than that.”
Greenwich’s matchup against Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe on Feb. 17 at Sacred Heart University’s Martire Arena saw it score early and often on its way to an 11-1 triumph, the eighth of the season for the Cardinals.

In the victory, senior Brett Sylvester recorded a hat trick to spark the Cardinals. Junior Boden Farmer tallied twice, while junior Teddy Johnson, junior Alex Zhukovsky, senior Joe Lewis and sophomore John Meehan each had one goal for Greenwich.
In the FCIAC Tournament, No. 1-seeded New Canaan and second-seeded Darien receive first-round byes. Should Greenwich win their first-round game against St. Joseph, it will play in the FCIAC semifinals, which is scheduled for Feb. 27.
